Super-wealthy Cary Moon’s attack on the rich falls flat

Seattle mayoral candidate Cary Moon is getting awfully desperate. So desperate she’s attacking “big money” contributors to her opponent’s campaign, claiming Jenny Durkan is trying to buy the race.

But it’s one-percenter Cary Moon trying to buy the race and she’s trying to do it by insulting the voters and hiding her own wealth.

In an alarmist email blast, Moon complains companies such as Amazon and CenturyLink are funneling large contributions into a regional chamber of commerce PAC to help benefit Durkan. Why? She says it’s “because they know I will work to make our city affordable and inclusive for all of us, not just the wealthy few.”

She believes Amazon — and, by extension, their employees — want to make the city unaffordable and exclusive. Moon doesn’t think very highly of the thousands of Amazonians who work their tails off, contributing to the local economy. But, beyond that, her point is beyond silly.

Amazon wants to make the city unaffordable? To what end, exactly? To push their own employees out of Seattle so they can’t attract a workforce? The 40,000 or so Amazon workers are not “the wealthy few” and Amazon doesn’t plan on conquering the region, leeching it’s precious resources, before moving on to another helpless city as if this were some lame alien invasion film. It’s not in the best interest of the company to make the city unaffordable. It’s also not in the best interest of the city to pretend we haven’t benefited greatly from the revenue Amazon brings into the region.

Moon’s campaign is in trouble, she’s not getting the votes she counted on from Nikkita Oliver’s camp so she’s turning to the tired anti-business campaign attacks that insult a large number of people who work and live in Seattle. But it’s not working. Oliver supporters are smart enough to realize Moon herself is a one-percenter.

Moon is a multi-millionaire and because she seems to have such disdain for the wealthy, I’ll recount her backstory with the self-loathing bias she seems to have for the wealthy.

Moon is worth more than $4.1 million thanks to high-end assets, like an exclusive, nearly $2 million condo with views of Puget Sound and the Olympic mountains, according to David Kroman at Crosscut. Much of her wealth apparently came from a business she didn’t create, but profited off of, when it was sold to a French manufacturing company which would end up laying off many of the company’s blue-collar workforce she claims to care so much about.

After her parents died, Moon received about $1 million. This is a reason why she’s self-financing a huge chunk of her campaign, literally trying to buy the election using her excessive wealth.

In the primary, Moon didn’t bother building a grassroots campaign like Oliver did; Moon just bought the primary win, telling Kroman: “I’m sure they were very frustrated at the injustice of the different track I was able to take. So I own that inequity. I see it and we all need to fix it.”

Just so we’re clear, her statement doesn’t mean anything. She created inequity that she wants to fix? So why not drop out? That’ll fix the inequity.

Now, of course, I don’t think she’s a bad person for being wealthy. I don’t begrudge her wealth. I don’t care that it was passed down, and I’m sure she uses her wealth for good. But she talks about the wealthy like they’re all evil, yet somehow, we’re supposed to not assume she’s the same way?

It’s so bad that she’s hiding her own wealth from the voters and pretending to be a working stiff like the rest of us. Speaking out against the wealthy donors from “big corporations” she tells her supporters, “We have beat them before. And together we can do it again.”

Them? You mean the wealthy? You’re one of “them,” Moon. So stop insulting our intelligence, stop hiding who you are, and run a more honest campaign. Maybe then you’ll become mayor and help destroy the city, with your blind ideological allegiance, like so many of your predecessors.
