King County Elections is forecasting a 48 percent voter turnout in the county on Tuesday.

Statewide, the Secretary of State’s Office doesn’t like to predict the outcomes, but is reporting that about 17 percent of ballots have been returned so far.

“In 2009, which was the post-presidential election year, we had a 45-46 percent turnout statewide,” said Erich Ebel with the Secretary of State’s Office. “And again in 2013 same scenario, we had about a 50-51 percent turnout.”

Ebel said their big message is you’re essentially giving your power to someone else if you’re not participating.

“If you don’t vote, someone else is using your power to make the decisions,” he said.

Your ballot must either be postmarked by Tuesday or dropped off in a ballot dropbox by 8 p.m. No stamp required if you drop it in dropbox. Most post offices will not stay open late to accommodate ballot drop offs.
