TCTI: Too Crazy Too Ignore

Did I Find Your Family?

I was beachcombing on Vashon Island a few weekends ago, and in addition to the rocks and driftwood, there was this:

Not a bad piece of wood --I would normally use it for a project -- but on closer inspection...

It's the Growth Post from someone's home! Now I'm curious how it ended up on the beach. So I'm posting these close-ups. If it's yours, or you recognize the family...

could that be the post that your family was tied to before the hillbillies dragged them behind their pickup?

It was a metal bumper with a Kersey family member at the wheel complete with no teeth and matching mullats.

Must be a half day today at the station....a short story. Thank you for taking a day off from the ban the scary gun campaign...although it's lookin a little slow on the comment wire....not your usual style since ya can't really turn a hunk of wood into partisan politics... but I like it. Reminds me of the door jamb at my grandmas.

    I Give Him Credit
He will post a new story more often than the others. Medved has left his up for about 5 days. Somebody should go check on him at his house and make sure he is okay.

Thought I'd check. The last Medved post was 1/31 (10 days, now)
BUT - Dave snuck one in on us yesterday, A post on an Oregon gun law BEFORE the nut cop post.

Some of those marks are about 40 years old....and sort of a metaphor
Statistically, some of the people could easily be dead now. Others have most likely moved to far corners of the country where they will never read his post about a post.

So there we see it. The optimistic advance of youth, and the quiet satisfaction of proud parents marking the milestones. The kid who was 5 feet tall in 1977 could easily be a grandfather now. Maybe the broken house was perched on some muddy cliff above the beach, putting too much faith in the illusion of foundation. Maybe it was just pushed aside, so a new house could be built for a new family; one who will remark about the growth of their sons on social media- rather than the kitchen door jamb.

Maybe it just washed ashore in the latest storm. Dave, walking where he does not live, found a post once belonging to someone who also lives far away. Amazing how something as simple as some horizontal lines with names and dates confirms story, history, and a common humanity.

    I agree...
nice break from the endless anti-gun screeds.

I suspect no one's looking for that, though. But it's cool, nonetheless.

We never did that at my house because my mom couldn't abide pencil marks on walls or door jambs. Too messy.

My wife's family did it, however. The house and pencil marks are going to be sold soon.

If those marks are meaningful, you should think about taking the trim and replacing it.
    Shouldn't cost much at all.

BTW, this post may not be an anti-gun rant or screed, but we are already seeing nasties.

    True enough...
but the reality is that time marches on and those kids whose heights are marked on that post are likely doing the same thing in their own homes with their own kids. The mantle gets passed and what was once a symbol of a familial unit eventually loses its meaning when the kids start their own families and the parents die.

It's sad, but that's life. None of my wife's siblings or kids/grandkids will be taking that door jamb. It'll be sold to strangers along with the rest of the house. They could if they wanted, but they won't.

This post Dave found once served a purpose, but that purpose has probably expired with the home owners most likely.

The door jamb in my wife's parent's home will just get replaced or refinished. It happens.

    I'd say
Look for someone named Alan who is around 6-3 and in his late 40's who has brothers or relatives Steve and Dawng (?). That should narrow it down.
