I guess we're all going to have to buy guns

By now I'm sure all of you have read Wayne LaPierre's latest commentary where he again promises to fight any efforts at expanding gun control, and then goes on to encourages law abiding Americans to arm themselves.

"It's survival," he says. So you can defend yourself in the event hurricanes, tornadoes, riots, terrorists or criminals create chaos.

Significantly, he doesn't mention what a lot of gun owners mention - protecting yourself from the government.

In fact he says this is NOT about a confrontation with the government, this is about those times when the government isn't there—or simply doesn't show up in time.

I can see why he'd back off on the anti-government stuff. I think we found out this week what happens when even a well-armed and highly trained marksman takes on the government.

So the theme now from the gun rights lobby is forget universal background checks, what America needs is universal firearm ownership for when the social order breaks down, apparently because there isn't enough government to keep it together.

And he's right, universal background checks won't solve the problem, because this country is full of people whose mental illness has gone unrecorded and untreated, as well as law abiding citizens who won't snap until they day they're fired, which tells me that about the only thing that can save us now is universal mellowness.

We all need a universal mellowness check.

In fact I think this latest NRA manifesto is probably the best argument yet for the federal government to legalize pot, and not only legalize it, but require that everyone smoke some the minute they get off work.

    umm dave.
you sound like Dorner was a case of how efficient the police are and how no one can stand up to them? You do realize he kill 4 people, two of them cops, and injured more. He took up HUNDREDS of officers and equipment, task forces, 100's of dollars and resources. All this from ONE man. From my point of view, this was an example of how much turmoil one person CAN cause. I love how you try to "sneakily" relate Dorner to a LAW ABIDING citizen wanting to own guns who doesn't trust the government. Won't be long before you don't have any job at KIRO. You don't make any sense. You actually used to be interesting to listen to. Now, you sound like a bitter man. I can assure you though. If law abiding citizens had enough of government now, or anytime in the future, even 3% of the population standing up would be chaos and our government would be unable to deal with it unless they launched an all out war on American soil.

Circuitfr: "even 3% of the population standing up...." Our forefathers agreed with you
and that's why the Second grants "the people" the right to bear "arms" (understood to be all the weapons of war, not just pistols and rifles) within the discipline of an organized militia .

One Dorner is a murderous nut case engaged in a lengthy suicide ritual. What a shame that he took out innocent lives (and I'm assuming that nobody thinks the cops he shot were "agents of the government and therefore deserving of death") en route to his personal demise.

Turn 3% of this county into Dorner, with some central organization and command, and it is entirely realistic to imagine murdering enough policemen, firemen, soldiers, and other government workers to destroy government at all levels.

The lone nut job, however, has no chance. Including the lone nut jobs who convince themselves they are champions of freedom and liberty.

NOT right after you get off work, Dave. Toke only at home.
You're not really suggesting we take a hit or two BEFORE driving home, are you ?

OK OK, its guns (again, again, again, again), not pot. ..... Gun or no gun? Just what would YOU do, Dave - toking or not - if someone broke into your home? ... Even on Mercer Island, police response time are slow enough that the cop would only get there in time for an autopsy``.

And whose would you prefer - the intruder's ? or yours ????????

what we saw happen this week was government on government violence
and caught in the cross fire were innocent civilians, such as the two women delivering the LA Times who happened to be driving a pickup (not even matching the description of the fired cop's) when LA police opened up on them with out warning. They probably thought they were back in Ciudad Juarez.

Are you suggesting the police should smoke more dope to make them less trigger happy?

    I think Dorner

Exactly exemplifies citizens against what he considered a tyrannical government. He wasn't a government official or employee and his attacks were mainly against government law enforcers who he believed was corrupt not just in LA but all over America.

The NRA is supported by the GUN MANUFACTURE, so I expect the NRA to say and/or flip flop to whatever statement that will allow them to continue to sell guns to the mass that believe what he is saying.

I am more scared of what the police will do to me that was clearly shown during there manhunt with the shooting up of vehicles not involved in the killings.

I am more scared of the wide spread corruptions going on all over the country by the people that are suppose to "Serve and Protect" our communities that continue to want to take our money and increase there presence in our communities.

You need to get some help with your manifesto sporty
so that when you make your last stand in your burnt out cabin, maybe someone will be able to decipher what you were trying to say.

Or better yet... just copy Dorner's...you two seem to have a lot in common. You could have been best buds.

In the UK where they have some real strict gun laws there is 2034 violent crimes per 100000 population. In the US,466/100000. We do seem to be safer with the guns. I understand that facts mean little to you but there they are.
