TCTI: Too Crazy Too Ignore

A political ad gets in trouble for being too accurate

There's a new ad campaign to promote gay marriage in all states - and it includes spots that have people saying things like this:

"It's time to allow marriage for all couples."

"When couples are committed they ought to have, I think, the same sort of rights that everyone has."

The second quote is from Laura Bush - who was on Larry King back in 2010 promoting her new book when King asked about areas where she disagrees with her husband. She mentioned that he and other conservatives had a lot of trouble with gay marriage.

"It's a real reversal, really, for that to accept gay marriage," Bush told King.

"But you do?" asked King.

"I think we could, yeah." She goes on, "I think it's generational thing."

So she was pretty clear. But when the new ads came out, she asked that her quote be cut.

Which seemed unusual, because the clip wasn't taken out of context, and there's no indication she's changed her views. But no problem - the Respect for Marriage Coalition pulled down the ad and in its place put up an ad featuring a 31-year-old former Marine named Craig Stowell, who is seen talking to the camera with his wife at his side.

"As Americans, we believe in freedom," said Stowell. "That's what I fought for as a Marine. That's what we believe in as Republicans. I didn't used to understand the importance of same sex marriage, but after learning my brother was gay, I wanted the same rights for him. He was the best man at my wedding. And I want to be the best man at his."

Controversy resolved. As Mrs. Bush herself said in the original interview.

"I think it's also a generational thing."

Get married. You might find yourself realizing that you prefer the rights of a single man.

    Or is it her saying.....
"When couples are committed they ought to have, I think, the same sort of rights that everyone has." But not under the definition of Marriage but rather civil unions? So maybe thats why she is asking to have her quote be cut! I'm just say'n.

    Maybe...
She is just tired of the public scene, and doesn't want to be used by any organization anymore. Maybe she doesn't want that hassle anymore, and maybe she has a right to not be trotted out by ANY organization using her name, face or words.

Mrs Bush is a public figure and she said the words and as the article stated she was not misquoted.Seems like she only said the words to help sell her book she was pandering to Larry Kings audience.

Ross - Let's talk about our first lady's opinion also
Ross, where is your leftist socialist commentary on Michelle Obama's comment a few years back? I don't recall reading it. Remember this: "… for the first time in my adult life I am proud of my country..." What the fudge was she doing in the US if she didn't care for it this whole time? How come we don;t put that on a billboard across the country??? Moron - I can't wait for you to be fired or to retire. It's because people like you that our country is in the state that it is.All you can do is blame the republicans and think for ways to increase taxes.

    that's what the left does....
they take everything out of context and spin it to sound how they think it should be when that's not how it really was intended or is. It's called a dirty trick, a lie, a falsification....Don't believe everything you hear and see...do your own research people....the media will turn you all into lambs.....

they already had the same rights as us!
They had the same right to marry the opposite sex just like the rest of us.

This is such a horrible argument. For two reasons. First, I will throw the same logic back at you: You still have the same rights as I do or any other gay person does. You can marry someone of the same sex just like us. Second, I really didn't have the same right as you before, because I did not have the right to marry someone I love. I'm sure you would get an uneasy or grossed out feeling if you thought about marrying someone of the same sex. That is the feeling I get when I think of marrying someone of the opposite sex.

VP Biden recently encouraged everyone to go out and buy shotguns, rather than assault weapons.

If a gun lobby decided to use that clip as a promo for their "products", do you really think Biden would sit still and not ask that he not be used for their ad?
