TCTI: Too Crazy Too Ignore
Dave Ross

Why Not?

As the Vatican prepares for its Papal conclave, Sr. Judy Ryan, says she prays daily for a Pope who will listen to the concerns of women. You may recognize the name - Sr. Judy is the biological sister of Father Michael Ryan, the pastor of St James Cathedral. Her order, the Sisters of the Holy Names, is part of the organization whose leadership is being investigated by the Vatican, which suspects it of dabbling in too much feminism.

She feels the Vatican is going to have to address the issues being raised by Catholic women, some of whom have been leaving the church because they've given up hope. Sr. Judy told Dave Ross that the Vatican should at least allow discussions of things like birth control, female priests, married priests, and even consider moving toward the day when a gay wedding could take place at the Cathedral.

All good thoughts and ideas, Dave. But don't expect miracles overnight.
Unofficially condoning birth control is a logical step no matter who becomes Pope. If for no other reason that the logic says that better and more effective birth control means far fewer abortions. .. The lesser of evils, so to say. And most Catholic families already practice birth control.

A greater role for women. Especially with a shortage of priests, the helping hands of the women of the church should be welcome. But don't expect priesthood in this generation. ... Also, don't expect gay marriage to be accepted. You just don't mess with sacraments. But, Dave, doesn't your parish accept gay partnerships?

Married priests is a coin toss. Priests were often married in the early church - even several Popes. And with the acceptance of clergy formerly of other denominations who are married, I can's see this prohibition lasting much longer - no matter how traditional the next Pope might be.

    .

Still betting on the Nigerian, Dave? ... My money is still in the 'kid' from Argentina.

    When Sister Judy can...
...point out passages in the New Testament (or any scripture for that matter) where Jesus goes completely against his own Judaism to promote homosexual unions, abortion, and women priests, then maybe the Catholic Church should begin those discussions.

If she doesn't hold the same beliefs as the religion, she should become a Unitarian. For them, anything goes.

Native, the good sister referred to birth control - not abortion.
And I can't recall birth control being even mentioned on the New or Old Testament.

Granted, Dave (and, apparently Sr. Judy) are way more liberal than I am, but that doesn't mean the pronouncements of a few early medieval Popes at=re set in stone. ... Same thing with priests being allowed to marry. If anything, the Bible speaks strongly FOR priests to have a wife.

Homosexual union? Abortion? Don't expect the Catholic church to suddenly become Anglican. At least not in several lifetimes.

Christianity began as a "sect" of Judaism (re: married priests)
and remained so for a few decades. Originally, James, the brother of Jesus and a temple priest, was recognized as the leader of the sect.

Regarding married priests: Jewish rabbis of the day were no only encouraged to be married- they were expected to be.

Some early Christian literature actually suggested that Jesus could have been married as well. The texts were used as fuel to set fire to the "heretics" who believed them when the male-dominated Roman church was established a few hundred years later.

It's not important whether or not Jesus was married. Being married should not disqualify a person from serving as a priest in the Catholic church.....(very easy for me to say, not being Catholic).

When they start allowing homosexual unions and promoting abortion
They can continue to call their organization whatever they like, but in reality they cease to be "The Church" and the pope will no longer truly be the vicar of Christ. They will simply be a giant political machine violating it's own doctrine for social issues. Many protestants believe it won't take several life times before the Catholics do this. Many suspect it will even change with the next pope. Time will tell...
