Find out what McKenzie Harris needs with the “Bring McKenzie Home Committee”
We told you yesterday about Doug and Sara Harris, and their beautiful daughter McKenzie. The family survived a devastating car crash on New Year’s Day that left Mckenzie confined to a hospital bed at Seattle Children’s Hospital.
McKenzie is now a quadriplegic and relies on a ventilator to breathe, but her progress is amazing, and doctors think she could be ready to go home as soon as April.
But her house needs to be completely renovated to accommodate her, and after we shared McKenzie’s story with you yesterday, help has come pouring in.
Family friend Katrina Flowers formed the “Bring McKenzie Home Committee” to help raise money and coordinate the massive effort for the family. She says the response has been overwhelming from people from all over the Puget Sound region.
“Oh my gosh they are speechless,” she says. “They are just ecstatic with all the donations and tearful and so appreciative and can’t believe a community can come together like this and do a project for their little girl.”
They had a list of over 70 specific items they will need to make the Harris home ready for McKenzie to come home. And most of those items have now been covered. Everyone from electricians to architects have offered services and supplies. Even Top Pot Donuts offered treats for the work crews.
“It’s awesome. We are so excited.”
A local Girl Scouts troop has also stepped up, donating all the proceeds from their cookie sales to the cause and staging a spaghetti feed fundraiser Saturday April 12 from 5-8 p.m. at Frontier Middle School in Graham.
McKenzie is a Brownie, her mom Sara one of their troop leaders.
Flowers says they still need the following donations to help bring McKenzie home:
Concrete pump truck
Down spout drains
Framing labor and lumber
Roof trusses
Deck remodel lumber and labor
Sky light(s)
Roof vents, felt, flash
Exterior siding and trim material and labor
Brick veneer/masonry and labor
Insulation material and labor
Plumbing supplies (sink, shower, tub, toilet)
Tile work/laborer
