The IKEA furniture store is notorious for creating friction between couples.
According to one study, shopping at the store brings up issues that couples tend to otherwise stifle, The Wall Street Journal reports.
It’s an enormous warehouse that people are trying to navigate, often on an empty stomach.
“People go [to IKEA] between breakfast and lunch, so they have low blood sugar already,” KIRO Radio’s John Curley said.
One of the major problems couples face at IKEA is it presents visions of how people should live. That sparks arguments on how things should be, Tom Tangney pointed out.
“It brings to the floor shaky relationship issues…,” Tangney added.
If a couple is able to run the IKEA gauntlet and make it home in one piece, the two still have the assembly task. That means putting up with limited instructions, Curley said.
Here’s some advice: “The best thing to do is eat,” Curley said. “Get something to eat before tackling one of those things.”
