Boze: Abandoning your family without notification should be a crime

Update: Sources report a vehicle and body have been found in the search for missing mom Jennifer Huston.

One of the local stories that’s captured my attention is the mystery of what happened to Jennifer Huston, the missing Oregon mom potentially spotted in the San Juans.

The 38-year-old woman was last seen last July 24 running errands. A search was conducted in Yamhill County, Oregon, and along the Willamette River.

Huston’s family says she spent time in the San Juans in the past. She grew up in Tacoma and Gig Harbor.

Huston was last seen driving in her Lexus SUV. She stopped off at a gas station to top off the tank, get a little bit of trail mix, then she just disappeared.

There was an announcement over the weekend that police were giving up the search because there’s no sign of criminal activity.

All I could think of was we should make it a crime, we should make it a crime to abandon your family without letting them know, particularly if you’ve got kids.

I’m not saying this is what she’s done. What I’m saying is that way no matter what, a crime would have been committed, so police could go and continue to look. Because this is a woman people say got along with her husband and family. Her husband passed a polygraph.

I almost never devote time to stories like this, but the idea of this mom disappearing like this with a family at home just bugs me. I can’t get it out of my head.

My sister, who also has a family of her own, feels the same way. She actually said to me, if I ever am missing, I’m not just out somewhere and mad at my husband, somebody has abducted me. She said that is the only possibility. She told me she would never leave without telling someone.

When you look at this woman, if you’re a sane person and you’re a decent person, and all indications from her family and relatives indicate that she’s both, there’s no explanation where, with this amount of media attention, you wouldn’t just contact your family and let them know, if you’d just run off.

If it was one of those situations where the person did disappear and didn’t tell anybody, I would be irate. I would say you can disappear now because now I’m mad. But I can’t imagine this to be the case here. Reports say she had secret plans for her anniversary already made, and people just don’t do that if they’re planning on disappearing.
