Former Seattle Mayor Mike McGinn decided to jump into the government shutdown debate with an astonishingly dishonest hot take blaming Republicans for the possible government shutdown.

Ludicrous outrage over ICE deportation

Reusing a Senator Patrick Lehay talking point, McGinn tweeted “The Republicans control both Congress and the White House – and they are trying to blame Democrats that they can’t keep the government running?”

As McGinn knows, you need 60 votes to pass this appropriations bill in the Senate, without a Democratic filibuster. Republicans have control of the Senate, but not 60 Republican Senators, making their control of the Congress and White House wholly irrelevant in regards to passing this bill.

Folks were quick to call him out.

“The Senate needs 60 votes for appropriation bills. You’ve been in politics for a while. How don’t you know this?”

McGinn is simply exploiting his Twitter followers’ lack of understanding on this, so that he may attack Republicans and turn them into the enemy. It’s cheap and stupid. And let’s be clear: if there’s a government shutdown, it’s because Democrats didn’t want to support the bill in the Senate.

Don’t let McGinn or people like him take control of the narrative because they fear the truth will hurt their side.
