Fingers crossed Amazon Go doesn’t incorporate creepy robots

Jan 23, 2018, 10:15 AM

Some may reject the idea of Amazon Go’s checkout-free system, but anything is better than a creepy robot that tells bad jokes.

Store union attacks Amazon Go

A robot being used in a Scottish supermarket and run by Heriot-Watt University’s Interaction Lab was reportedly removed from the store after customers complained that it wasn’t helpful and downright disturbing.

The robot — named “Fabio” — was intended to carry out “time-consuming tasks.” Instead, it gave vague answers and told jokes.

“What is it when one cow spies on another cow? A steak out,” one of the jokes went.

Though some employees reportedly became attached to Fabio, it was ultimately boxed up and sent back to the university.

Maybe those concerned with the Amazon Go business model killing jobs can breathe a sigh of relief, knowing that robots aren’t quite ready to completely take over our supermarkets.
