Make unconventional treats for your trick-or-treaters this year with some ideas from chefs Tom Douglas and Thierry Rautureau.

Looking for some sweet Halloween treats to hand out to your trick-or-treaters?

Chef Tom Douglas recommends going to Whole Foods and getting some unconventional treats.

“I’d make some caramel apples,” he says, “or get a whole pizza and hand out slices.”

“If I were trick-or-treating, and I got a pizza slice, I would be so excited!” says chef Thierry Rautureau. If you want to hand out something more conventional but homemade, he suggests baking cookies and handing them out fresh from the oven.

Although Tom says parents might be wary about letting their child eat something unwrapped, Thierry counters, if your neighbors know you, it shouldn’t be a problem.

Even if you don’t get trick-or-treaters, Tom says you can make a treat for yourself.

“Get some nice, thick-cut bacon, cut it into little 1-inch pieces,” he suggests. “Cook them until they’re nice and golden-brown, then take your apple and cut that into 1-inch pieces. Put your Fran’s [caramel sauce] and put that on the stove to warm up. Then take a skewer and skewer the bacon to the apple and then dip in the caramel sauce.”

Ingredient of the Week: Balsamic Vinegar

"There's only two consortia who produce balsamic vinegar," says chef Tom Douglas. "One in Mordova and in neighboring Reggio Emilia. True balsamic vinegar is made from a reduction of pressed Trebbiano and Lambrusco grapes."
