Hahn Building facing possible demolition

Feb 5, 2018, 1:15 PM | Updated: 1:15 pm

The distinctive Hahn Building at First and Pike in downtown Seattle is the latest well-known local building to face possible demolition.

Bubbleator was Seattle’s original sphere

A new project proposed for that site will be the subject of a second “Design Review Meeting” at Seattle City Hall in Room L-280 on Feb. 6 at 5:30 p.m.

The public is invited to make comments in person at the meeting, or to submit comments via email to (referencing project 3028428 at 103 Pike).

A Kirkland-based company called Marketview Place Associates LLC is seeking permits from the City of Seattle to demolish the 19th century, three-story brick building and replace it with a 14-story mixed-use tower with retail, hotel rooms and residences.

A local real estate website reports that at an earlier meeting last October, the Downtown Design Review Board voted unanimously to require a second review meeting in order to see “much more context” as well as plans for community engagement, and further study of how the new tower might relate to adjacent existing structures.

Meanwhile, neighbors and others have formed a group called Save The Market Entrance to oppose the demolition. They contend that while the Hahn Building is not officially considered a landmark, the appearance and scale of the existing structure are consistent with historic Pike Place Market across the street and that the proposed project will significantly alter one the city’s most recognizable intersections.
