Feel sorry for the actors in Carrie remake

Chloe Grace Moretz plays Carrie in the Kimberly Peirce remake.

Taken from Friday’s edition of KIRO Radio’s Morning News.

The original Carrie is considered a horror classic and of course, is directed by Brian De Palma. It got Oscar nominations for Sissy Spacek and for Piper Laurie playing her crazy mother.

This time, those parts are played by Julianne Moore, who is a wonderful actress, playing Carrie’s crazy mother. Chloe Grace Moretz plays Carrie.

This film is almost a textbook lesson of why remakes are usually a very bad idea. It’s laughable, it’s embarrassing. It’s basically a career killer.

You will rarely see such terrible, over-the-top performances. I’ve worked a little bit on movies and one of the things you’re supposed to do as a director, and particularly as an editor (they use the term ‘protect the actors’) you protect them from scenes that are just transparently bad. You can see people acting.

For the director, Kimberly Peirce, she directed “Boys Don’t Cry,” I don’t think she works after this. It’s breathtakingly bad.

Julianne Moore has a difficult role. She’s supposed to play a religious nut, who in many scenes, is mutilating herself and ripping her own flesh. It’s not easy to do that, but it’s very easy to do it in an over-the-top way.

You go to a movie like this, you feel sorry for the actors … and the audience.
