On Wednesday, Seattle School District teachers will join striking bus drivers on the picket line.

Rantz: Upset school bus drivers should just quit

Students won’t be impacted because it’s a planned half-day and teachers won’t be walking out until the afternoon, after classes are dismissed.

On Tuesday, Teamsters Union 174 sent a plea to Seattle Schools to fine First Student, the company that employs the drivers, saying that doing so would help quickly resolve the strike.

The union said Seattle Schools could fine First Student the maximum amount allowed under their contract – a potential cost of $1.2 million a day.

KIRO 7 reached out to the school district which said, “The district will address collection of those damages in conjunction with the legal counsel as the situation unfolds.”

First Student told KIRO 7 they made their latest proposal and are waiting for the union’s next move.

Drivers are pushing for better health care and retirement benefits.

About 400 school bus drivers for Seattle Schools walked off the job last Thursday.
