They’re coming for your mind

The director of national intelligence had a simple message when he appeared before the Senate.
“The United States is under attack.”
Director Dan Coats was referring to the evidence that Russian interests will try to hack the 2018 election just as they tried two years ago. You remember those stories about how a little gizmo could hack a computerized voting machine.
“I can insert it and it resets the card and now I’m able to vote again.”
The device only cost $15. With the card and knowledge of how to use it, if you went from machine to machine, you could hack the vote. There is no evidence of any successful hack against a machine.
But there is considerable evidence of the attempt to hack our minds. And to prevent that, Director Coats says, we as a nation have to show some grit.
“The resilience needed for us to stand up and say we’re not going to allow some Russian to tell us how to vote, how we ought to run our country.”
Damn straight. I’m sure he’ll do his best to protect your Facebook feed from subversive rumors. But what if that doesn’t quite work? I can think of only one other thing, and that is for the CIA to just expose which candidates the Russians are trying to get elected.
I wonder how that would go over.
