President Trump says ‘make a difference,’ but will he be bold?

“It is not enough to simply take actions that make us feel like we are making a difference. We must actually make that difference.”
He wants to do what works. So let’s apply that to what happened in Parkland, Florida.
A background check didn’t work; the shooter passed it. He had no criminal record.
Budget undercuts Trump focus on mental health, school safety
A gun-free zone obviously didn’t work. Stationing an armed police officer on the campus? That didn’t work; the shooter just avoided him.
So how about a “red flag” law that lets the cops bring you in for putting up threatening social media posts?
“Take that person and bring them before mental health officials, involuntarily, and have them examined,” is what the Broward County Sheriff wants.
Maybe more armed school officers? Even armed teachers? Of course, at some point, you feel like you’re living in Kabul.
We’ll soon be building a new border wall and deporting students who don’t have the proper papers — in the name of national security. Maybe that will work.
But there is one more thing –- the ongoing reality that countries with fewer guns and with laws that make guns difficult to get — have an insanely low rate of mass shootings -– or any kind of shootings -– compared to the U.S.
Trump postpones rally in wake of Florida school shooting
I mention that only because the president did say he’s looking for things that will “actually make that difference.” Amen.
Weirdly, I didn’t hear that mentioned by any of the public safety officials on Thursday, but if you did, please tweet it out.
