Update: The Seattle Police Department released bodycam footage of the initial contact with the suspect and the final encounter that lead to the suspect’s death.

Car prowl suspect fires at officer

Seattle police shot and killed a car prowl suspect near NE 55th Street and 33rd Avenue early Monday morning.

The incident occurred in Seattle’s Ravenna neighborhood shortly after 4 a.m. SPD reports that the suspect has “died of his injuries.”

“About 4:20 this morning, officers responded to a report of a car prowl in the 6000 block of 34th Avenue NE — that’s up in the Ravenna neighborhood,” Detective Mark Jamieson said.

The suspect ran once officers saw him near a car he was attempting to break into, according to SPD. As he ran away, the suspect turned and fired shots at a police officer. The officer fired back, but did not hit the suspect who then got away. More officers responded to the area after shots were fired. A K-9 unit was also called to the area.

“We believe that suspect broke into a home and he stole a vehicle at gunpoint, that was around 60th and 28th NE,” Jamieson said. “The suspect drove that stolen car before he crashed the vehicle at 55th and 26th. Shots were fired as officers attempted to take the suspect into custody at that location. Unfortunately, it is a fatal officer-involved shooting.”

Two separate officers fired shots at the suspect over the course of the morning. No police officers were injured. SPD was not releasing any identifying information about the suspect Monday morning, other than he was a white, male adult.
