A driver suspected of causing a triple fatality crash on I-5 Thursday morning in Lakewood was arrested on possible charges of DUI.

Washington State Trooper Brooke Bova says the suspect driver may also face charges of hit-and-run, possession of a stolen firearm, and three counts of vehicular homicide.

The crash occurred when the driver passed a semi-truck in the right lanes of southbound I-5, crossed two lanes, and hit another vehicle. The impact sent that vehicle into the abutment of the New York Avenue overpass.

All three of the vehicle’s occupants were killed. State troopers says a 30-year-old man, a 51-year-old man, and a 44-year-old woman died at the scene.

Debris from the crash, including the engine from the victim’s vehicle, flew into the northbound lanes of I-5.

A DuPont officer’s patrol car was struck by a semi-truck.

Nobody involved in crashes in the northbound lanes had significant injuries.

Traffic backed up for miles as drivers were diverted off the freeway.

School buses were running up to 30 minutes late due to the crash.

All lanes of southbound I-5 were blocked until around 7:30 a.m.
