Famous bridge failures in Washington

The new South Park Bridge is open following its closure in 2010 over safety concerns.

Luckily, this crossing was repaired in time to avoid any serious problems. But Washington certainly has had its share of past bridge fails.

Here are a few of the most legendary:

Tacoma Narrows - Galloping Gertie

The Tacoma Narrows Bridge went down on Nov. 7, 1940 around 11 a.m. According to HistoryLink.org, the bridge was only about four months old, and had been rockin' and rollin' the whole time it was being built. Workers reportedly sucked on lemons to keep from getting sick on "Galloping' Gertie" as she was nicknamed.

The Narrows was the third longest suspension bridge in the world at that time at 2,800 feet. Before the collapse, people actually used to ride the bridge for fun when the wind was right.

Historylink.org says the cause of the failure was solid girders that act like sails. Holes in the girders allows the winds to pass through. The next Tacoma Narrows Bridge incorporated a lot of lessons learned from the failure of the galloping first.
