History of the Slurpee

July 11th is celebrated across the country with free Slurpees at 7-Eleven.

It turns out Washingtonians love Slurpees. The number one selling Slurpee store in the country is located in Kennewick, Washington.

So for all you Slurpee lovers, here's a look back at the history of those cool beverages.

Slurpee Beginnings

The Slurpee was actually created by accident by a Dairy Queen owner in Kansas in the 1950s.

Apparently, owner Omar Knedlik's soda fountain was busted so he popped the sodas in the freezers. When they came out they were partially frozen and slushy and people began asking for them by request.
