A look back at Smokey Bear

Multiple wildfires, including one that is the largest in Washington state's history, have left behind scorched earth.

Wetter, cooler weather has helped firefighters make progress in their efforts to get these wildfires under control.

But as crews work tirelessly, we take a look back at the icon who has been the spokesman spokesbear for the United States Forest Service, trying prevent them all since 1944.

Smokey made his debut in the campaign to stop wildfires in 1944. This was the first poster, with a campaign that also included a deer resembling Disney's Bambi.
