‘Revive I-5’ encore expected to snarl Seattle traffic

After several weekends off due to weather, the I-5 rehab project fires back up again with lane restrictions and ramp closures.

If your plans to take mom to brunch, attend the PINK concert at KeyArena, or take part in the Color Run at Seattle Center, you can guarantee that you’ll be stuck in some long traffic delays.

Starting Friday at 8 p.m. through Monday at 5 a.m., the Washington State Department of Transportation will reduce northbound I-5 down to two lanes between Michigan Street to Olive Way, which is just before the Convention Center.

The project requires closures of the follow off-ramps and on-ramps:

  • Westbound I-90 off-ramp to northbound I-5
  • Eastbound I-90/Edgar Martinez Drive off-ramp to northbound I-5
  • Dearborn Street on-ramp to northbound I-5
  • Northbound I-5 off-ramp to Edgar Martinez Drive
  • Northbound I-5 off-ramp to Seneca Street
  • University Street on-ramp to northbound I-5

Plan for long delays into Seattle and added pressure on alternate routes like Northbound SR 99, First Avenue South, Fourth Avenue South, and Airport Way South. Last time “Revive I-5” happened, we saw drivers take northbound I-405 and get routed off at Rainier because the ramp to northbound I-5 from westbound I-90 was closed.

The northbound I-5 express lanes will be closed and open in the southbound direction from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. per normal weekend schedule, according to WSDOT.
