Monitoring sex offenders must be our priority

Jan 14, 2014, 12:58 PM | Updated: 1:06 pm

We have hundreds of sex offenders on the loose in this state and we have little idea where they are. That includes 82 Level III sex offenders, the most dangerous ones, in King County. There are nine Level III missing in Pierce County.

The sheriff’s departments work hard, but they’re understaffed. This is the type of issue we can all get behind, as a community, to address.

Do we need more funding for the sheriff’s departments? Do we need stiffer penalties for convicts? Do we need to rethink the registration policy?

We have a lot of people much smarter than me in office. I’m calling on them to come together, look at the issue, and help come up with some prescriptions so our communities can become just a bit safer.

King County Sheriff’s spokesperson Cindi West and state Senator Pam Roach will join the show Tuesday night to help shed some light on the problem. (West at 7:05 p.m., Roach at 7:30 p.m.)
