Spokane Catholic Diocese gets more abuse reports

The Catholic Diocese of Spokane has received 21 additional allegations of clergy sex abuse, all by adults who contend they were sexually abused by clergy years ago.

Attorney Greg Arpin said the diocese will fight some of those claims in court, on the grounds they do not meet the legal threshold from a settlement with victims that brought the Spokane Diocese out of bankruptcy several years ago.

"We want to make sure the strict criteria of the settlement plan for allowing future claims is followed," Arpin said Tuesday.

Seven of the claims have been allowed by a court-appointed reviewer who weighs the merits of the allegations and then decides how much money a victim receives. Kate Pflaumer, a former U.S. attorney for Western Washington, denied five of the claims, and the remaining nine are pending.

The diocese will challenge some of Pflaumer's decisions in U.S. Bankruptcy Court.

In a letter to parishioners, Bishop William Skylstad of Spokane said the diocese contends that some of the seven allowed claims should have been denied.

"We believe we have strong legal arguments in this matter," Skylstad said.

As part of the initial $48 million settlement to 184 victims, claims had to be filed by March 10, 2006. But the settlement set aside $1 million to handle what were expected to be a small number of subsequent claims.

If that fund is depleted, the diocese and its individual parishes are on the hook to keep a minimum of $200,000 in the fund until 2016 to deal with future claims. The parishes have put up property as collateral for that obligation.

"The parish properties might well be at risk," Skyslstad said.

An advocate for victims of priest sex abuse said the new allegations show that the issue is far from resolved, despite the past settlement.

"It's just immoral and impractical to try to force deeply wounded victims of horrific child sex crimes to meet some arbitrary deadline that's set up to benefit the wrongdoers," said Barbara Dorris with the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests.

"Traumatized victims step forward when they can, not when church bureaucrats and lawyers try to tell them they must," she said.

The diocese declared bankruptcy in late 2004 to deal with scores of claims of sex abuse. The diocese and its 82 parishes agreed in 2007 to pay $48 million to 184 victims of sexual abuse. The deal forced the diocese to liquidate nearly all of its assets.

    Somebodys lieing.
The homosexual community claims they don't prey(pray) on our children. Somebody must be mistaken.

    Somebody's ignorant
HLC, pedophilia is NOT EQUAL to homosexuality. Asshole.

    What?
Are you saying these priests are not homosexuals? If they weren't wouldn't they be abusing girls?

...and how do you know girls are not involved? Homosexuality DOES NOT mean the person is a PEDOPHILE. Think about that long and hard.

Catholic Priests get 2 articles in today's news
In Seattle Priests and Nuns are attacking military bases, and in Spokane (and pretty much everywhere else) they are sexually abusing children. Roman Catholics need to seriously question how these individuals have hijacked their faith, and how their Church is void of the plain and simple teachings introduced by Jesus Christ. And, when the Vatican fails to act on these incidents, it is complicit. Excommunication should be immediate, and the Church proactively assist law enforcement to find and prosecute these sickos. Homosexual or not, there is a special part of Hell for these perverts who use their faith as a vehicle to abuse the innocent.

    What a deceptive headline
    "Abuse reported at Catholic Diocese"

    Yes, DECADES AGO.

Many of the alleged perpetrators died back in 1950's, 60's, and '70s. The courts acknowledge that the church put in place years ago mechanisms to protect children from potential abuse. Why write a headline that suggests that current abuse is taking place? You are much more likely to find abuse within the Boy Scouts, youth sports, or any other organization where adults have much less supervised access to children.

By the way, Rover, what did an 81-year-old priest and an 83-year-old nun use to "attack" a military base anyway? A crucifix? Which of Jesus' teachings did they deny when they entered Naval Base Bangor? The part about love?

Seems awfully personal. Why all the hate, Rover?

    I should have said:

    criminal acts
Native .... your either ignorant or in denial. Both actions cited are either IMMORAL or CRIMINAL ACTIVITIES or both. It has nothing to do with hate.... and to be honest.... yes, I hate anyone who abuses a child, or puts our nation at risk from a nuclear detonation. Which part of sexual child abuse or attacking a base that secures nuclear weapons don't you get ?

    Rover, you're right
I'm certain the priest and the nun posed a real threat to detonating a nuclear warhead. Good call. I guess that does give you reason to, in your word, "hate" them.

They broke the law, they expected to be arrested, and they were arrested. Just like civil rights protesters and farm workers who trespassed in the 60's, and Vietnam protesters in the 60's/70's. God forbid that our nation's founders took action with their consciences and signed the Declaration of Independence. That was a criminal act, too.

The sexual abuse in question happened many, many years ago. Your statement is that it is still taking place ["...and in Spokane (and pretty much everywhere else) they are sexually abusing children."]. Please, if you have any information of current abuse, do share it with the authorities.

You may want to recite the Lord's Prayer to help you determine if you really want to carry all this anger with you. That is, if you are a Christian.
