Slain Seattle police Officer Timothy Brenton was remembered as a father, brother, husband, friend, teacher and hero at a public memorial service at KeyArena.

Thousands of officers from around the Northwest attended Friday's ceremony, which followed a procession of hundreds of cars with lights flashing through the city.

"As I reflect on the evening of October 31, I see a man of quiet dignity and virtue possessed of a desire to serve and protect, engaged in the most noble of human endeavors. He was teaching. That is what we remember today," said Deputy Chief Clark Kimerer in his opening statement at the ceremony.

Officer Brenton was shot and killed as he sat in his patrol car Halloween night with Officer Brit Sweeney. Brenton was making a traffic stop.

"Officer Timothy Brenton was a man worth knowing," said Interim Chief of Police John Diaz, before talking about Brenton's history as a police officer and about his civilian life. "The expression of love that he found, his wife Lisa, his daughter Kayleigh, his son Quinn, probably might be his greatest contribution. His greatest mark as a man, as a husband, as a father."

Officials in attendance included Gov. Chris Gregoire, Sen. Patty Murray, Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels and former police Chief Gil Kerlikowske.

"Timothy is a home grown hero. He didn't set out to be a hero and Lisa tells me he would be a little chagrined at the fuss we're making about him today. A little chagrined, but very, very proud," said Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels.

Nickels thanked the 1,300 police officers serving the city of Seattle. "That means that there are about 1,300 families who, each day, say goodbye to their loved one and don't know whether they might not get that awful call that the Brenton family got last Saturday.

"Our police officers are our city's most visible public servants. They are dedicated and they do an excellent job day in and day out and I want to thank you for that service," said Nickels.

With a shaky voice, Governor Gregoire said, "Mike and I want to personally express our condolences to Officer Brenton's family. She added, "As Officer Brenton demonstrated, putting on the uniform is an act of courage every day, every time."

Honor guards with bagpipes, drums and flags took part in the ceremony.

I wish most people who reply were as respectful as you have been. Maybe ratbob, 333, SWASSociates and others can take lessons. Some guys have been awful enough to call my old employer to read my postings. One idiot keeps calling and driving by.

since you are ignorant, let me educate you. Tubaman's killer's were juveniles with minimal records. In the eyes of the law, they determined that Tubaman's killer's did not intend to kill him, just assualt him. Therefore, they were not guilty of murder, but of Assault 1st Degree. I bet every officer in the area wishes that were different and Tubaman's killers would be put away for a long, long time. Unfortuantely, that problem is laid at the feet of the Legislator's and Judges. Don't try to give moral equivalance or bring bad light on this funeral by bringing up Tubaman's murder, it is apples and oranges. AJ, be a man for once in your life and just admit you are celebrating this officer's murder. It is hard to hide from your multiple, anti-police rants on this website. Gutless coward.

Since YOU are ignorant....and are making ignorant assumptions. No, I am not celebrating this guys murder. Put it in perspective, it's the same reason I hate hate-crimes rules. Why do we give special favors to those who were killed because they belong to a special class? He was a cop. Big deal. Why is he more important than a soldier, tubaman or any other human being. A lot of regular dads get murdered every day, but they don't get a funeral procession through the streets of Seattle at taxpayer expense.

    how silly
how many cops were at this procession? as i said a few hours ago there are only a handful of 80-83 datsun b-210 hatchbacks still on the road in WA. if the cops had split up into groups of 10 and gone to the homes of the datsun owners today looking for one with bullet holes instead of clogging up the roads of seattle, dude would be behind bars by now. sounds like don of the ron and don is taking my tip and running with it on air! don't forget, as i said earlier in here, if my tip works the wife of officer brennan gets the $105,000.00.

    jacinto, your ignorance continues
do you seriously think they haven't already done that? Stop patting yourself on the back thinking you came up with some brilliant solution.

I wish we could have an isolated city......
....full with AJ's and jacinto's and then no police. I mean afterall they are evil, non-responsive and just full of themselves anyway....right AJ? Then let a few criminals know that there is no police in that city and watch the rampage. And if they for some reason do survive they will be come begging to have their safe and normal life back .... a life only possible because of police officers, because of soldiers giving their lives so we can have a good one. I never was in the military, I never was a police officer, nobody in my extended family is a police officer or military person (got one brave firefighter though) but even though I didn't see anything first hand I can understand the sacrifice and bravery these people bring to their jobs. And yes AJ and jacinto any soldier should get this kind of funeral if you died defending this country, but then you guys would have to deal with bad traffic every day. I love this country, I love the freedom we have but it is people like you two that make me sick to the stomach and question why we let perfectly good, caring people die defending selfish, self-centered people like yourself. But then I get a hold of myself and think proudly of what these men and women are doing and I for one thank them for keeping me and my loved ones save to the best of their abilities and asking nothing in return. And as far as tuba man goes. It isn't the police fault that our so called justice system let his murderers go, police is complaining about that for years that they risk their lifes to catch a suspect only to have the court let them go the next day, week, or month.

    Hey jacinto
Has it ever accured to you that this Datsun might not be registered at all, or not in this state or even country???? Boy, good thing you are not in charge solving crimes.

They do have such situations in the south, where there might be one cop and most of the town is heavily armed. Guess what? Crime is non-existant. I wish we could go back to that kind of a situation where guys like me and jacinto round up a posse to go after the tubaman killers and string them up like the vermin they are. We need more vigilante justice.

    Unless....
you are one of those criminals I'm thinking about, you won't stand a chance against them AJ, don't flatter yourself otherwise you wouldn't be calling police when somebody cuts your phone line because I certainly wouldn't bother police for that.
