Beat back the flu with home remedies
It seems like every family has a "home remedy" they swear can either help prevent or cure the flu, but do any of them really work?
Turns out there was some truth to the old belief that chicken soup will help you recover faster from the flu.
"There's protein, that's hydrating. There are salts. All these things are very, very important when you're sick," said Naturopathic Doctor Jamey Wallace with Bastyr.
An amino acid in chicken soup might also help thin mucus and inhibit inflammation.
Wallace said garlic and onions have anti-viral properties. Several herbs and supplements have anti-inflammatory and immune boosting properties, like eldeberry, anise, and tumeric.
Wallace cautions that none of this is a vaccine or a cure, just part of the ammo that can help your own body fight off the flu.
