Boeing breaks ground on SC plant

Work has officially started on building Boeing's $750 million aircraft assembly plant in South Carolina - the largest industrial investment in state history.

Multiple media outlets reported that officials scooped ceremonial shovels full of dirt Friday at the site near the Charleston International Airport where Boeing will assemble its 787 jetliners.

The company last month chose North Charleston over Everett, Wash., for the assembly plant, but Boeing's commercial airplane division president Jim Albaugh says the new plant should still more jobs to Washington, too.

The North Charleston plant is expected to create 3,800 jobs within seven years and construction will mean another 2,000 jobs.

Boeing received an incentive package from South Carolina of up to $170 million.

    Give Me A Break
They got the plans through Planning including Environmental Review in a month. Get real. They made their decision months ago if not last year.

    What a crock
"The company last month chose North Charleston over Everett, Wash" They chose NC a lot longer ago than last month... they just wanted to squeeze more money out of that state and gain leverage against the unions in Washington. Good Luck South Carolina...it will be a situation totally controlled by Boeing. You bent over and took it.

    Wake up call?
Isf this is not a wake up call to the unions I don;t know what it would take. It is about time the union got a good smack in the face. Spoiled rotten comes to mind here.

    Kudos to SC

    Even the union pukes...
... can't be surprised. The writing was on the wall as soon as Boeing moved headquarters to Chicago. Seattle was a good place to do business, but when the cost per man-hour reaches the current rate, well, you just can't be surprised.

    The 2000 Construction Jobs.....
......alone would be enough to keep that number employed for the next 2-3+ years. Then add in the materials needed for the project, the office people to manage the paperwork, the drivers needed to deliver the product. The people needed to manufacture all the MATERIALS ALONE needed for this project....it's staggering! The article is barely scratching the surface of the number of people in this area affected by the loss. It's water under the bridge, but WAKE UP, people! It's dog eat dog out there...nothing is "guaranteed"!

    Say no to UNIONS
Just how much more did you expect boeing to take? Really, you Boeing Union members paid the big cats at the top of the union big money and nobody thought that the company might just say enough is enough? Not very smart when it comes to self preservation huh. You deserve to lose your jobs for being so dumb.

You ain't seen nothing yet... And yet no one is blaming Olympia.
There is a report out in Dubia today that Boeing is telling the arab world that they will be cutting even more jobs here. McNerney Says Figure Not Finalized, But Not As Many As In 2009 Boeing Chairman and CEO Jim McNerney said he expects more job cuts to be coming at Boeing in 2010, but how many had yet to be determined. The cuts would be in addition to the 10,000 already planned by the company. Arabian Business reports that McNerney said Boeing was unlikely to shed another 10,000 jobs, but that some additional job cuts were likely. “We’ve talked about the 10,000 and then maybe some more,” he told the paper. “Not in the magnitude of another 10,000, but there will be a continuation of the trend lines through to the end of the year.” "Where is the Gov?" you may ask. Probably planning more increases on L&I, as well as increases to the B & O taxes I'll bet...
