Griffey to be a Mariner for another year

The Mariners have confirmed that Ken Griffey Jr. has agreed to a one year deal that will keep him in Seattle through 2010.

Griffey hit .214 this season with 19 homers and 57 RBIs in 117 games and was embraced by fans in his return to Seattle. He was a designated hitter for all but the first weeks of the season.

Griffey turns 40 this month. The contract is expected to be similar to the one-year incentive-laden deal he signed to return to Seattle for the 2009 season

In a news release Mariners General Manager Jack Zduriencik said, "We believe that Ken's presence with the Seattle Mariners organization was such a positive asset last season with his leadership on and off the field," said Zduriencik. "His passion for baseball, life and the Seattle Mariners goes unsaid. We are happy to have Ken back for the 2010 season."

Listen to Zduriencik on 710 ESPN Seattle:

710 ESPN Seattle Insider and former major league cather Bill Hasselman thinks it's the right move for both the Mariners and Griffey, "I think above all he brings back clubhouse leadership. If they're willing to sign him again, they were impressed with what he did in that clubhouse more than anything else. The fact that he doesn't care about playing time, and he's able to come in there and have a good attitude and lead the clubhouse, that's saying a lot. That's a good thing to have with a team that's gonna be changing a lot of players here until they find the right men."

After spending his first 11 seasons with Seattle, he played nine more with Cincinnati and the Chicago White Sox. Griffey returned to the Mariners this year under rookie manager Don Wakamatsu and helped transform what had been a fractured, bickering clubhouse with his leadership, energy and constant pranks.

Griffey underwent arthroscopic surgery on his left knee to remove a bone spur last month.

It's the second time in a year that Griffey has undergone surgery on his left knee. He was limited by the knee at times during the 2009 season. He had it drained on multiple occasions.

IS IT REALLY WORTH IT ?
71 hits in 321 at-bats. A .221 average 19 HR's with 43 RBI's. I know the name goes a long way in this city. But, if you take away the name... is that someone you would give just over $3 million to? I hope he does better this year. I wouldn't want to go out with a season like that, those are the facts. Honestly, a win will bring a clubhouse together as much as a leader. There are plenty of leaders in that clubhouse, starting with Wak. I would rather pay a decent everyday outfielder, or a utility infielder $3 million. What do you think the #1 reason Jack Z. brought Griffey back to Seattle? He brought him back to put people in the seats. Attendance was actually down from 2008 to 2009. READ THAT AGAIN! Attendance went DOWN from a team that lost 101 games to a team that had the hometown hero. I know he doesn't care what he is paid. I am just saying a winning ballclub will bring just as much to a clubhouse as Griffey would. And why not offer him a hitting coach position or something in the front office, being an ambassador to South Africa or whatever he is.

    Enough
Enough is enough, he deserted Seattle just like A-rod and now he is your hero?

    Urinal Cakemaster …Casual baseball fan?
Griffey is nothing like A-Rod. Junior could have played anywhere he wanted, including staying with the Mariners for more money than he got from Cinci. He left to be closer to his family. In return the M’s got five player’s including Mike Cameron. When Alex left it was all about his $252 million from, at the time, a crappy Texas team. We got a big steaming pile of squat for him. With respect to Junior’s family, that has always been his motivation. Alex has is a well documented philanderer with strippers. His wife took his two kids and divorced him because of his cheating. Speaking of cheating, A-Roid has admitted as much with his steroid use. Ken Griffey Jr. is an MLB icon who is the 5th leading home run hitter in major league history. He never used steroids. A-Rod’s a loser. Griffey is a hero. You’re a urinal cake.
