One positive came out of the Washington Huskies basketball team's bout with the flu last month: a new player.

Coach Lorenzo Romar announced Monday that 6-foot-9 sophomore forward Brendan Sherrer had made the 14th-ranked team as a walk-on.

The Huskies found Sherrer in a walk-on tryout camp held last month while seven of their regular players were out sick. So many were missing, the team couldn't fully begin practicing until a week after it had planned to.

The 240-pound Sherrer is from Monroe, Wash., and played for Archbishop Murphy High School in Everett. He is the first walk-on to make the team since 2004.

Romar says Sherrer has the size and will to bang down low with teammates during practice.

He provides front court depth that Washington needs after losing rugged star Jon Brockman to the NBA after last season.
