Call Of The Year

Comments   |   Print this   |   E-mail this

With the early start time in Toronto you may have missed an incredible moment Sunday.

Let me take you back a bit. On the pregame show there is a "Picks to Click" segment where the broadcasters and Mike Blowers pick who they think will be the days player of the game.

Sunday things got a little goofy during the segment and Mike made a wild prediction.

Tui's second at bat came in the top of the 5th inning and as you can hear, the Blowers prediction was on the mind of Dave Niehaus.

I cannot tell you how many times through the years I have sat next to Blowers during a game and he has told me exactly what was about to happen. This however, was unbelievable. And fun too! Truly two of the best calls of the year.

    Incredible.
I have spent all season long reading what Shannon writes here, and I've often thought about posting in support of her excellent writing and eye/ear for great Mariners stories, but I couldn't let this one pass. Shannon Drayer, I have gone through the MyNorthwest.com registration requirements simply to say - you are a big part of why I love following the Seattle Mariners.

    Too Awesome!
I just can't stop listening to these clips. I've probably listened to it 20 times now. Nostra-Blowers with the prediction and one of the all time play calls by Neihouse. It's just fun to listen to. Thank you Shannon for this post, it is the best and most fun post of the year and that's saying something because all of your work is great and fun to read.

    Funny stuff......
But can someone please tell Rizz not to laugh while he has a mic. in front of him? Loved his mess'n with Blowers about the prediction, but the laugh...... Ouch... LOL!

If anyone reading the comments also reads Digg.com
I submitted a link to this blog entry over there. Go on over and Digg it up. This is just too good to keep to ourselves. http://digg.com/baseball/M_s_announcer_calls_5th_inning_homerun_in_pregame_show

    Priceless!
Mike Blowers' audacious pregame prediction (aka Picks to Click) - 2ยข Listening to Dave Niehaus call the EXACT HR play predicted hours earlier by Mike Blowers? Priceless. I've always been impressed with Mike's knowledge of the game (and his wise and patient views of player development and performance...), but this... this is ridiculous - Mike gave us way more than his two cents worth! Shannon, what a pleasure it is to have you reporting and blogging for the Mariners. Your ear for a good story and interviews so often get at the real heart of the game and people. Thank-you.

    Awesome Call
Will a statistician please calculate the likelyhood of Blowers predicting this will all of these variables? This was amazing and so fun. Great call buddy.

    More audio clips, please
Another great story, Shannon, thanks. Although this blog entry was just plain fun, having followed sports for over 30 years, you're the best reporter I've read when it comes to insights into players' lives and performances. Could you have 710 post more audio clips, particularly of the Between the Baselines, Farm Reports, and Sundays with Dave segments? I can't always catch the full pre-game show or the weekend Mariners Magazine, but I don't like to miss these parts of the radio show. A podcast would be ideal. Nothing fancy, just the clips. Finally, would you post a link to your Twitter feed? Thanks.

    Re: crossingwa Comment
I am with you. The mlb doesn't play the pre or post game shows so I don't get to hear very many of the tidbits that Shannon is so great at sharing. I am not often at home but even when I am there is a lot of static on my radio. I would absolutely love to have the segments you mentioned, at the very least, on a pod-cast. Someone earlier mentioned a NY Vinnie segment they would like to have a link to. I don't know if it is possible to have any of these things though because there are so many contract rules with mlb that ESPN has to follow.

    Too Much Fun This Season
I have enjoyed this season as much as any. It is great to see that these guys like each other and have a solid nucleus to build on. They deserve to have a winning season and manager of the year. If Griffey decides to hang them up over the winter please sign him for the opening homestand so we can say goodbye in style. One more year Junior.
