Call Of The Year

Comments   |   Print this   |   E-mail this

With the early start time in Toronto you may have missed an incredible moment Sunday.

Let me take you back a bit. On the pregame show there is a "Picks to Click" segment where the broadcasters and Mike Blowers pick who they think will be the days player of the game.

Sunday things got a little goofy during the segment and Mike made a wild prediction.

Tui's second at bat came in the top of the 5th inning and as you can hear, the Blowers prediction was on the mind of Dave Niehaus.

I cannot tell you how many times through the years I have sat next to Blowers during a game and he has told me exactly what was about to happen. This however, was unbelievable. And fun too! Truly two of the best calls of the year.

    Amazing
I was listening and this was awesome. Dave and Rick's reaction was the best thing I've heard in a long time. Rick has the best laugh!! I really enjoy the broadcast team the M's/710 have in place now. Great job this year.

    Just About Happened Again...
And tonight(Wednesday the 30th) it nearly happened again. Rick Rizzs made a prediction for Michael Saunders to hit his first Major League HR during his 2nd at bat, also on a 3-1 count. The count was 2-1 and Rick gets all giggly and excited. Next pitch, ball--3 and 1 and Rick is getting really excited. Next pitch is a fast ball and Saunders rips a line drive that hit about a foot below the top of the right field fence. Now lets see if the national news does a follow up on the predictions.

Then Rick Rizz Saunders prediction & the call of his prediction!

    question
I'm confused, is the person laughing in the booth Blowers or Rizz? The TV clip taken from CNBC with the Niehaus call shows "voices of Mike Blowers and Dave Niehaus". Niehaus also says, "I believe you, Mike". Hmm. Can anyone confirm for sure if it was Blowers or Rizz. Thanks!

    Wow!!!
I heard this on the way to work today on Detroit's Dick Purtan show. I briefly thought this might be a joke since Dick Purtan has been joking around on his morning show in Detroit for probably forty years. I decided that it was real since who could make something like this up!!!!!

In the audio on the prediction & at bat....
In the audio the reason it sounds a little like a homemade recording on the second section especially, is I am confident it is probably Rick Rizz & earlier in the first one possibly Kevin Creman (producer-engineer) or someone in the booth JUST CRACKING UP at the prediction & then it coming true! They were besides themself with laughter. All of it on the video clip @ Mariners.com Video on this page "Tuiasosopo homers as predicted" http://seattle.mariners.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20090930&content_id=7247054&vkey=news_sea&fext=.jsp&c_id=sea is audio from the radio broadcast. There's more audio ther, it's precious.

    Who was Really laughing
I am glad someone brought this question back to my mind. I believe that the laughter is actually Mike Blowers because Rick should have been on the radio side during this home run but also when you hear Ricks call for Michael Saunders the other day that same laughter is in the background. You can easily differentiate Rick and a laugher.

    Who was Really laughing? ANSWER
debisfriends wrote... Who was Really laughing? Blowers I believe was on the radio side at the time. If U listen to the audio clip on the video(which is from the radio call) It is CLEARLY Rizz, check it out! The video identifies them. Regarding laugh:....
Mike blowers only has a two or three syllable laugh: uh huh, uh huh, ha ha ha. He doesn't get very exited or show much emotion. Rick Rizz on the other hand gets very excited and his voice gets higher and his laugh forced (not fake, but forced). His laugh is very distinguishable from others, especially Mike Blowers. It had to be Rizz in the background!

    Tui's homer
Classic stuff. I grew up with (and loved) Van Patrick and Ernie Harwell doing Tiger boradcasts, but this was as good as anything I remember. Love it.....
