Cougs Win Game #2

Comments   |   Print this   |   E-mail this

It was a bit scary, but WSU won their second game of the season 67-61 over Eastern Washington.

Klay Thompson led all scorers with 24 points, DeAngelo Casto had 16 and Reggie Moore collected 15.

The Cougs started out ice-cold and looked completely out of rhythm, and finished in the same way. Fortunately, the time in between was what we've been waiting and hoping to see. The D was suffocating, looking almost as good as the defenses from previous years, and when the ball was in WSU's hands, they scored quickly from inside and outside.

Unfortunately the good times didn't last and just when it looked like the Cougs were going to take their double-digit lead and run away with it, the Eagles crawled back. They hit several 3-pointers and when the Cougar D got overly concerned with the perimeter, they went down low to center Brandon Moore.

Up by only 2 in the final minutes, Klay Thompson nailed and 3 and sealed the game for America's Team.

It's good to see a win, but the Cougar youth and inexperience showed. When Thompson started slow, no one stepped up and when they were up big in the 2nd half, they couldn't put it away.

BUT, it is game 2 of a new season and a completely new regime. Did I really expect them to be perfect right off the bat? Well, kinda. I got excited. But thank goodness for the early nonconference schedule which is filled with some forgiving opponents. Once they reach Gonzaga on December 2nd, some of these issues will hopefully be ironed out.

Next up is IPFW (I can't figure out what that stands for, but I believe it's either a university located somewhere in America or a Union) who will head to Pullman Thursday for a 7pm game. No TV for this one, just the sweet sweet sounds of Bud Namek on the radio.

Go Cougs!

    Cougs Win Game #2
Klay Thompson gave the impression last year that he is, at present, overrated; and 24 points or no 24 points, he confirmed that. The media adore him for some reason; but from the first pre-season game of 2008 through last night, it is evident that only one message goes from his hands to his brain: shoot!. He seems to have no understanding of team play. He shows great promise and will be a star WHEN he learns that there are other things to do with a basketball than fire at will. Meanwhile, it is a great pleasure to watch an amazing athlete like DeAngelo Casto who seems doomed to take a back seat, publicity-wise, to his immature team mate. Casto is obviously working on improving his game. Thompson, just now, seems stuck in the image of his own inflated reputation.
