Pajama Jeans?

Posted by Stefanie

In a world of Snuggies and Slankets, it was only enivitable that someone would design a pair of jeans you can wear to bed...right?

pajama jeansPajamaJeans, which are basically sweatpants with denim details, are advertised as "the pajamas to live in, and the jeans to sleep in." And I admit, I've seen a fair amount of copycats out there - jeans that look like jeans from across the room, but upon further inspection are just yoga pants with details you'd find on any pair of denim, like fake twill stitching, hardware details, etc. And they're super soft, with a matte jersey feel.

I smell a infamous trend...one that we'll fondly remember 10 years from now ("remember those PajamaJeans? Why did we wear those things?"). But hey, for those moms who want to look stylish while chasing their 2-year-old around the house, PajamaJeans are probably the perfect fit for a hectic lifestyle. Apparently, these snuggie-influenced loungepants are selling like hotcakes, but I can't shake the thought that they should be in the same family as "Mom Jeans (eww)".

They only come in one wash (for now, but the company says more varieties will pop up soon) and go for $40 a pop. They range in sizes from XS-L, and that's about it. Their website doesn't offer a whole lot of info about the jeans except for a pretty funny video and an order form.

Virtual makeup

Posted by Stefanie

Would you do this? Japanese cosmetic giant Shiseido created a digital cosmetic mirror for customers to virtually try on their products. Yeah, you read that right...it's a mirror that scans your face, reads your skin tone, then makes recommendations about what makeup products you should purchase.

Pretty weird, considering it's just as easy - and far more accurate - to just pick up an eyeshadow brush and apply the product yourself. Of course, you save risking an eye infection from the product or an annoying salesperson breathing down your neck to buy buy buy.

What do you think...would you use something like this, or would you try the real thing? Are we looking to the future or are we just lazy?

A lesson in brushes

Posted by Stefanie

Before I was a makeup artist, I didn't really understand the importance of makeup brushes. It didn't matter if the brush cost $5 or $250, they were all the same to me. And I didn't understand why someone would shell out the extra dough to buy something as simple as a makeup brush, when you could find something equally useful in a $5 version.

makeup brushes

But truly, there is a difference. Brush hairs can vary from blue squirrel (high quality) to pony hair, with kolinksy sable, goat, and synthetic bristles in between. It's important to select a brush with the appropriate hair. Synthetic brushes are best for applying foundation, and brushes made of blue squirrel hair work great for applying powder products, like blush, eye shadow, loose powder, etc.

And don't worry about matching your makeup brushes. You don't have to buy all brushes made by MAC or Estee Lauder. Rather, select a brush that works best for you. Virtually all of my brushes are from different brands. Another thing...when it comes to price, think of it this way: The more high-quality (read: expensive), brushes are, the longer they'll last, as long as you use proper maintainance (e.g., cleaning your brushes on a weekly basis, spritzing brush cleaner after daily use, etc.). Trish McEvoy brushes are some of the most expensive brushes in the industry, but think of them as investments that will last you at least 10 years with proper maintainence.

Here are the basics to remember when choosing your brushes:

  • You really need at minimum four different kinds of brushes: 1) eye shadow brush, 2) foundation brush, 3) blush brush, 4) large powder brush
  • If you want, buy two extra brushes: 1) smaller eye shadow brush, 2) eye liner brush
  • Your primary eye shadow brush should be the size of a fingertip and slightly domed. Actually, all of your brushes should be tapered or domed slightly for a precise application.
  • Your foundation brush should be slightly tapered and made of either synthetic or marten hair (or both, like my Armani foundation brush). Synthetics are perfect for cream or liquid formulas.
  • Your brush brush should be made of curved bristles with a nice, fluffy texture. Pick something that isn't too big - you want to be a little more precise with your cheek color so it doesn't end up all over your face.
  • Your large powder brush should be fluffy, tapered, and made of blue squirrel or pony hair.
  • Be sure to also have q-tips and makeup sponges on hand for quick touch-ups.

After you've found your dream brushes, be sure to keep them nice and clean so they'll last you at least 10 years plus. Use a gently baby shampoo to cleanse your brushes at least once a week. Bacteria can pile up quickly on these brushes...and if you have a blemish, you're likely to spread the bacteria around after multiple uses. Mix warm water with a little bit of the shampoo for natural hair bristles (or dish soap for synthetics). Swish the brushes around, rinse well, blot them with tissue, and lay flat to dry.

Another thing to remember when choosing brushes: The more high-quality the brush, the more likely the brush hairs are woven into the brush handle (which secures them much better than brushes glued to the handle...those are usually the cheaper varieties). With that said, make sure NOT to get the handle wet...otherwise, the likelihood of your bristles falling out are much higher. You don't want little brush hair scattering around your face.

Here are some of my personal favorite brands of makeup brushes to look out for:

And there you have it! If you have any questions about brushes, feel free to leave them in the comments section below.

Wear red!

Posted by Stefanie

Don't forget to wear red tomorrow for National Wear Red Day! It's part of the American Heart Associations "Go Red for Women" campaign. But it's not limited to just women...men can dress in red too! It's as easy as putting on a red tie, red dress, red socks, red shoes...even red nail polish!

IMG 8973 7539

And while you're at it, visit the cosmetics department at Macy's tomorrow for a mini-makeover and to find your perfect shade of red lip color (it's tricky, let me tell you!). You'll also have the opportunity to talk with local health and fitness experts about maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Bonus: if you wear red or make a $2 donation, you'll receive a Red Dress pin from Macy's.

Can't find anything red in your closet? Stop by Macy's today through February 7th and save an extra 10-20% off your in-store or online purchase. If you're buying something online, use the code WEARREAD at checkout (you're welcome). If you're shopping in person, just wear red and receive an extra 20% or 10% most sale and clearance items throughout the store (phew!).

If you're feeling gutsy, wear bright red lipstick tomorrow...or red tights. Red shoes are always fun, and so are red enamel necklaces/rings, earrings...and the list goes on. Have fun and make sure to wear red tomorrow!

Why is this a trend...again?

Posted by Stefanie

I was shopping at Nordstrom the other day and noticed a disturbing "new" trend that popped up in several departments. The return of the skort...and the cropped, loose-fit tank that you'd see in Footloose.

I won't name any brand names, but this is what I saw...

6007675

Oh, and it doesn't stop at this particular brand. To all you skort lovers out there (which I hope doesn't include any of you), you can find more fluffy, unflattering creations made by other designers in other boutiques:

flowered skorts

Seriously, so disgusting! Please, please, PLEASE let this be a trend that fades into the oblivion quickly. And dear god, please let the footloose tanks follow suit...

footloose tankfootloose tank 1freep2043313653 p1 v1 m56577569831808598 150x296

Here are my thoughts on trends. Trends come and go, and some even make a comeback. A lot of the time, trends that might have been popular a decade ago (i.e. flannel shirts), reincarnate into an updated garment that reflects current trends. Flannels that were once baggy and long in the 90s have transformed into fitted plaid tops today.

Exhibit A (90s):

empire12107Clueless3

And look! Cropped tops were also popular...and they look nearly the same as the cropped tops that are selling for over $100 a pop today. Break out your old cropped tops and tanks stowed away in your closet, because you can probably sell them on eBay for at least $50. Sad.

Exhibit B (today):

ashleycoffeestop2ketle2006312822 p1 v1 m56577569831843604 150x296

Clearly, the flannel trend has revamped itself so it's no longer a frumpy, old, soft shirt you stole from your dad. It's been reinvented as a fitted, fashionable shirt you'd pair with skinny jeans or shorts.

But, for the most part, "trends" are trends for a reason. They're widely popular for a moment in time, then they eventually fade away. Isn't it time for designers to be creative and not so lazy? Why bring something back that failed? Additionally, why bring back a trend that was popular only 10 years ago? People still remember the trend very well. I used to wear flannel shirts in middle school (ahhhh, I know), but at the time, I thought they were great and loved them. And I admit...I did purchase a designer flannel shirt at the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale last year, but I have yet to wear it.

If you're going to bring back an old trend, do so with caution. Just because it's back doesn't mean it looks good. And just because the price tag skyrocketed and a designer name is behind it, don't think for one second you should follow the pack. Wait it out and see how long the trend lasts. And, if you must, buy the most inexpensive version of the trend, because it's sure to disappear just like it did the first time around.

2010 Grammys: Hits and Misses

Posted by Stefanie and commentated by Lisa

Here's the thing about the Grammys: You're supposed to walk the red carpet wearing something innovative, awe-inspiring, glitzy...and flattering. Unfortunately, some celebrities decide to just go with the glitz and leave out the flattering part. Let's start with the fashion misses this time around.

Worst Dressed

1. Lady Gaga

ladygagagrammys

Stefanie -The photo says it all. Same with the jaw-dropping expressions from other attendees on the red carpet. What's worse, I was expecting her to wear something even crazier that this getup.

Lisa - Solar system gown...in collboration with Armani? whhhhhaaaaat?! AND the hair...she should have matched that with the banana ensemble her last go around...

2. Imogen Heap

imogenheap

Stefanie -Prime example of trying to be innovative and different but ending up with a hot mess. This was the #1 tweeted dress of the evening, but for the wrong reasons. Ditch the crazy, crazy.

Lisa - Heap of $#*!

3. Britney Spears

britneyspears

Stefanie -Oh, Britney. Didn't you forget you have two children, aren't 18 anymore, and you probably shouldn't wear a sheer dress in public?! Hideous, heinous, gross, unflattering. Need I say more?

Lisa - This show was not at Hef's mansion people...less is more...Brit...c'mon! Original meaning...SHOW LESS it's MORE flattering.

4. Nadeea

nadeea

Stefanie -You're strutting the red carpet, not Aurora Avenue. Did she really look in the mirror, tousle her hair, and think to herself, "Wow, I look amazing for the Grammys...definitely red carpet worthy"?? Probably one of the trashiest outfits I've ever seen someone wear on the red carpet.

Lisa - Again, not at the Playboy mansion. This is the trashiest ensemble I have ever seen. Perhaps this flies in Russia? Darling...head back to your trailer and cover yourself up! btw Snooki called and she wants her bump it back! Embarrassing!

5. Shir Shomron

shir shomron

Stefanie -Quite honestly, I'm not sure who she is, but she's a model wearing a hideous orange dress. She's a model...shouldn't she be able to look good in anything? Guess not.

Lisa - matching hair to outfit...it's a no can do.

6. Shaila Durcal

shaila durcal

Stefanie - OMG! What is this? Why, why, oh why would someone create should a grotesque dress? Is she auditioning for "Ms. Chaquita Banana"? Or was she transported in time from her 1989 high school prom?

Lisa - Welcome to Hawaii...here is your lei...enjoy your stay.

7. Katy Perry and Russell Brand

katy-perry-russell-brand-52nd-annual-grammy-awards

Stefanie - The side boob isn't the alternative to cleavage, it's the road to trash. Don't like the body-hugging nude gown and Russell's chest hair needs to be tucked away!

Lisa - Although I can appreciate that she just returned from India...flesh tone and gold bindi on forehead...yeah no. Also...sidenote...husband to be Russell Brand is not...you are not in India anymore either so ya might want to learn how to button?

Best Dressed

1. Carrie Underwood

carrieunderwood

Stefanie -Carrie looked stunning in this angelic, cream dress that was dusted with a hint of silvery-gold shimmer. The cutout detailing was also a nice touch.

Lisa - She is perfectly beautiful.

2. Miley Cyrus

mileycyrus

Stefanie -I'm not Miley's biggest fan, but I am a fan of this gorgeous Herge Lever dress she rocked on the red carpet. The color is amazing and the shoes look fantastic!

Lisa - Just 17 and many red carpet appearances...girl has style!

3. Keri Hilson

keri hilson

Stefanie -This mermaid-cut Dolce and Gabbana gown was stunning on the curvy Keri Hilson. It's elegant and edgy at the same time, a perfect formula for the Grammys.

Lisa - Couldn't be any cuter! Barbie like...loved it!

4. Fergi

fergi

Stefanie -The cobalt blue minidress looked absolutely incredible on Fergi's svelte figure. I also love the accessories and shoes she paired with her ensemble.

Lisa - Emilio Pucci with silver snake like accent...delicious.

5. Lea Michele

leamichele1

Stefanie -I LOVE this dress! The stacked heels she wore are absolutely adorable, and the feathered detailing at the bottom of her dress was so incredibly stunning. The one-shoulder look is red hot right now and looks amazing on Lea.

And her makeup was absolutely stunning as well. Purple shadow complements brown eyes beautifully and brings out the gold/green flecks. Smoky eyes should always be paired with a muted, nude lip. Be sure to match your cheek color to your lip color. Gorgeous!

Lisa - WORD! My vote for best dressed AND red carpet appropriate.

leamichele

6. Taylor Swift

taylorswift

Stefanie -Not the biggest Taylor Swift fan either, but she did look beautiful in this sparkling blue gown. The top of the dress looks very retro and slightly futuristic at the same time. All in all a fantastic look.

Lisa - Great cross between style and sophistication for 19...women take note...you can look great at any age.

Notable...year of lighter tones perhaps...sandy flesh toned neutral hues.

7. Beyonce (pre performance)

beyonce

Stefanie - I do love the nude color against her skin tone like Lisa says...I'm still not a huge fan of the sleeves. But if anyone can pull this off, it's Beyonce!

Lisa - Hourglass perfect. Best skin tone to pull off sandy neutral hue.

Very few stunners (in a good way) but all in all entertaining to say the least :)
