Mariners need wins. Clement to return to catching
by Mike Salk
MARINERS/MLB
Mariners get back to baseball tonight after a lovely off-day in Detroit. They have just 10 games to make their move before the trade deadline on July 31st. With the deadline approaching Jack Zduriencik isn't worried, but Larry Stone has a lot of questions about what the Mariners should be doing. One answer could be holding onto Erik Bedard and Jarrod Washburn a little longer. More of Stone here and here.
Dave Cameron says there is no reason to worry about Russell Branyan. He is just going through an unlucky month, one that the bullpen might experience pretty soon. That would be tough to take. Lookout Landing reflects on this weekend of baseball and sees an improved Ronny Cedeno and a surprising quote from Jarrod Washburn. Ryan Divish thinks that if Kenji Johjima wasn't making $8 million a year there wouldn't be a catching controversy.
Jeff Clement is waiting for his next chance in the big leagues, this time it might be at DH or first base. As you know, I was in Tacoma last night where I chatted with Brandon Morrow. He had a tough day on Sunday while he experimented with a new delivery. While I was there, I found out Clement has been cleared to return to catching. It'll take a little while before we see him catch a full nine innings. But he can now squat long enough to practice and we should see him catch a few innings in a game very soon. Good news for Jeff who prefers catching and I think is going to make a good major leaguer when he gets his next chance. Great news for the M's as a minor league catcher who can hit is much more valuable than a minor league DH.
ESPN looks at trade answers for each team, they suggest a low-end outfielder for the Mariners.
Si.com highlights Jarrod Washburn and Erik Bedard as trade targets. But SI also thinks Washburn could be the worst bargain on the market, giving credit to the Mariner outfield for making him look so good.
SEAHAWKS/NFL etc.
Doug Farrar writes that the Seahawks injuries last season were of historic proportions, no offensive player started all 16 games.
Michael Vick is awaiting a ruling from Roger Goodell, but the new United Football League would take Vick with open arms. Could a 4 team league be the best place for him?
At the halfway point in the year Jerry Brewer points out that Seattle has gotten back in it's sports groove.
The Sounders look to advance past the U.S. Open Semifinals tonight against the Houston Dynamo. They game will be played at Starfire Sports Complex.
Fredy Montero and Jhon Kennedy Hurtado were named to the MLS all-star game, joining Kasey Keller and Freddie Ljungberg.
NOTES
-For the rest of the season the Mariners opponents have a winning percentage of .502 compared to .498 for the Angels
-The Tigers have a 27-13 home record, the second best in MLB
-Garrett Olson (3-3, 4.53) will pitch for the Mariners, he may need a good start if he wants to keep Ryan Rowland-Smith in Tacoma. RR-S is snorting and stmping down there. He wants to be back up with the big club.
-Rookie Rick Porcello will start for the Tigers- He has lasted only 4 innings his last 2 starts
-And finally, British Open winner Stewart Cink just tweeted this message with this picture:
"Having trouble deciding which cup to pour my OJ in this morning."

Brock Huard played football for his father, Mike, at Puyallup High School before moving on to the University of Washington. There Brock erased older brother Damon's name on several season and career passing records. Brock spent the first three years of his professional career with the Seahawks before being traded to Indianapolis. He rejoined the Seahawks in 2004 and ended his career that season.
