Beyond Confused: Caught Between the Seahawks and the NFC West

Comments   |   Print this   |   E-mail this

by Mike Salk

Let me be perfectly honest with you. I'm confused right now.

For the past two weeks, I've been saying that the Seahawks were in a must-win situation against Dallas, Detroit and Arizona. And I was 100% sure that I was right.

And after watching their second straight epic stinker, I was ready to declare the season a lost cause. In fact, everything tells me this season is over...except for one thing:

The Math.

Look at the math (i.e. the standings in the NFC West). It'll tell you that despite the misery of watching another Seahawks blowout on the road, they aren't even close to out of it yet. The math says that with Arizona laying an enormous egg at home against Carolina, the Hawks are still just two games behind with a trip to the desert two weeks away.

And a look at the schedule allows for a little more hope. While the Hawks host a Detroit team that fell to previously winless St. Louis at home, the Cardinals go to Chicago to play a suddenly rejuvanated Bears squad.

Could the Hawks beat Detroit at home? Sure. Could the Bears beat the Cardinals in Chicago? Sure. Could the 49ers lose in either of the next two weeks against Tennessee or Chicago? Sure.

In fact, you could potentially see Seahawks play the Cardinals for a share of the division lead at 4-5!

OK, that's a pitiful division leader, but that's the way it could shape up.

On the other hand, let's use our eyes.

Our eyes tell us that this Seahawks team is severely, if not fatally flawed.

For much of this season, you've heard me say that the silver lining of all the injuries has been the fact that most of the injured players would return. But now that Walter Jones and Lofa Tatupu are done for the year, that is not really the case anymore. Leroy Hill and Marcus Trufant are back. Matt Hasselbeck is back. Josh Wilson is back. For the most part, the team you saw out on the field in Dallas is the team you'll see for the rest of the way.

Did it look good enough to beat Arizona on the road? Did it look good enough to go 7-2 and get to 9-7 on the year? Did it look like getting Sean Locklear back was going to be enough? Of course not.

The team we watched in Dallas struggled badly in all three phases of the game. So much so that I can't even bring myself to do a proper “3 Up, 3 Down.” But let's take a quick look at the three phases.

Offense

The offense was stagnant. The running game had a few pops, but was mostly a predictable affair. How many times were they in 2nd and long after a first down run went for less than two yards? Unfortunately, the passing game wasn't much better. I have no idea what is going on between Matt and TJ Houshmandzadeh, but they are clearly still not on the same page after eight weeks. Deon Butler continues to be a non-factor. And just when I was ready to declare Deion Branch to be a difference-maker after a fantastic touchdown catch, he runs a route half a yard short on a third down play. Unacceptable for a guy that makes his money as a possession receiver. And the passing game can't just blame the offensive line the way we did after the Arizona loss. Hasselbeck had time to throw in Dallas. He was only touched four times.

Defense

The defense, however, was the bigger issue on Sunday. It's not that they are altogether awful or likely to give up more yards or points than anyone. It's more that they seem unable to come up with a big play when they need one. The Cowboys offense put the ball on the ground three times, but only once could a Hawks player jump on it (and that came after the game was out of reach!). Not once could they pick off Tony Romo, who is known for taking too many chances. And although David Hawthorne registered two sacks, neither came at a key juncture.

Tim Ruskill and the Seahawks braintrust put their money and resources into their defense in recent years. That defense needs to be the heart and soul of the team. It needs to be the identity. And it needs to pick them up when the stakes are highest.

Jordan Babineaux was named the starter because he makes big plays. Right now, his biggest plays have involved missing tackles while a running back cruises by him. Aaron Curry has played like a beast at times, but three tackles and a QB hit is not a serious impact. And that front four has been unable to get any penetration for weeks now. Where is Cory Redding? Where is Brandon Mebane? Colin Cole?

Special Teams

And finally, the special teams play was a disaster on Sunday. It started early with Justin Forsett making a fair catch at his own six and was capped off by the Patrick Crayton 82-yard punt return that essentially put the game away. But in between, they failed to capitalize on a Crayton fumble and could muster just 10 punt return yards on their own. The kick return unit wasn't much better, averaging just 22.7 yards on three Josh Wilson returns.

So where are we now?

We know this Hawks team is seriously flawed. We also know the NFC West is still wide open and that it night take only eight or nine wins to take the division crown. We know that not much more help is on the way and that the group on that plane ride home is going to have to dig deep if it wants to save this season.

    Another wasted season
It's such a shame that this team is so bad within such a weak division. The math does say the 'Hawks are still in it despite their record. However, 7-9 is the most we can hope for, and that will not do it. You can't be on top forever in the NFL....just look at St Louis and San Fran. Both used to be dominant dynasties in their time, and both have sucked for years now. It's time to rebuild and retool. And we need a different coach. Mora is just not the guy!

I think they've mailed it in
When Tatupu went down, the defense lost it's leader, and no one else is stepping up to take that role. The O line is so decimated and it can't open holes or protect Matt. I see TJ on the sidelines throwing a fit because he's not getting the ball instead of throwing a fit trying to pump up the guys on offense. I saw the white towel get thrown from the sidelines in the 3rd quarter.

Forget Walter Jones! Way past his prime. It's time for new talent. Time for REAL running backs and REAL protection for the QB. Time for defensive players who can defend the run and the pass and make tackles. How about innovative play calling instead of the predictable vanilla plays used over and over? Most of all, there is NO chemistry on this team. And the wrong head coach.

    Holmgren vacuum
I wonder if Mora can push the team over this pshychological point. You get the feeling that there isn't enough team cohesion. Off course, it's hard to get anything without the first string team, but coaches are hired to bring teams together regardless of obstacles. I hope Mora has this skill - he needs it pretty bad right now.

Remember the days of Walter Jones' perennial holdouts from camp and then he'd just walk right in around the first preseason game, strap on the gear and be in midseason form? Now he has injuries that just won't heal. A big reason the Hawks are where they are is the OL, everyone knows that. I can't think of a worse OL in the league and there's no way you can win with bad OL play. This team has some pieces, like the WR and LB corps so I don't think rebuilding is necessary, especially in this era of Plan B and worsts to firsts. A partial rebuilding process is in order but not an entire one. Besides maybe Unger, an entirely new OL is needed along with a premiere RB to make Mora's system work. And they need to get bigger, younger and faster in the secondary.

Suit up the 12th man next week!
Might as well, at least it might add to the slapstick entertainment the hawks have been providing the fans!

How The Seahawks win the division
It's all about how you finish. And it all begins next week, yes; and it ends on the final week at home, in week 17. Here's how! We will start and finish with Tennessee! They will end 5-11. But, they are more an 8-8 team. They lost the first three, barely! Now they are coming on! For the Hawks, they have to do what Jim Mora is talking about. They have to get so strong that by week 17 the Hawks beat Tennessee at home! Now isn't that interesting? How it plays out: This week Tenn beats the 49's. Two weeks later they beat Arizona. Week 17 we beat Tenn. So, it all comes down to the Titans! We beat Detroit, Az., S.L., the Niners @home, Tampa Bay, and finally Tennessee to close it out. We go 8-8. We lose to Minn., Houston, Green Bay. Arizona only beats the Rams, the Lions, and the Rams. S.F. beats Jacksonville,( maybe), Az. Detroit the Rams. Arizona and S.F. go 7-9, and even with that, there is wiggle room for the Hawks. But they had better start wigglin' and beat Tennessee at the end!

    Is T.O. in the house?
Was Terrell Owens traded to Seattle last week? Did I not see T.O. on the field and on the Seahawks sideline? Oh, I see, that was T.J. Houshmandzadeh! Tim Ruskell, good job! Your criteria for having only character guys is spot on here. You signed a "character" in Housh. Great, not only do the Hawks have football problems, they now have a "T.J." problem and like with T.O., it only gets worse. T.J., grow up! Showing up your QB, pouting and taking the T.O. route of "it's everyone else, not me" is nothing new and gets old quick...get over it. Go back to Cincy, you'll have less to complain about there, because unfortunately there will be alot to complain about here for awhile...

Salk, This Line Read to My Earlier Post
"In fact, you could potentially see Seahawks play the Cardinals for a share of the division lead at 4-5!" SO when the Seahawks play the Cardinals in 2 weeks the best they can be is 3-5, the worst Arizona can be is 4-4. When both teams meet in 2 weeks neither team will go into their match having played 9 games. NOW at the END of the contest, if the Seahawks beat the Cardinals both teams COULD both be 4-5... Y'know after reading your earlier post 5 times, I think that's what you meant to say, you just didn't word it very clearly, hence I thought your math was off. Still, I hope your part prophet, Mike, 4-5 AFTER THE CARDINAL game looks pretty good to me right now... - E.C. Henry from Bonney Lake, WA

    Running Game
To win football games you need to run the ball. Then the opposing defense cant key on your your passing game by rushing the QB, and they wont be able to drop their line backers to help fill zones if there is a chance they can be burned by a run. Also when you can run the ball you eat up the clock and rest your defense. We have NO running game. Julius Jones is a 3rd string running back in the NFL. We need to aquire both new running backs as well as new offensive linemen. Then it takes time for the lineman to develop chemistry and continuity. This is at least a two year project. By then your QB is too old and beaten up and your receivers will most likely need to be upgraded, not to mention the defense. So if the GM and powers to be were to execute a perfect rebuilding it is a five year project. Get used to mediocrity in the meantime. Kevin Callabro was the ONLY voice I heard prior to last years draft who was even asking the question "what about trading down for Knowshon Moreno? Are you fans comfortable with Jones, Duckett and Forsett as your backfield?" I thought he was correct then and now I know he was.
