Tom Douglas: Grand Central Baking Book
Mention Grand Central Bakery to anyone around the Seattle or Portland areas and you'll hear descriptions of the bakery's gooey cinnamon rolls, buttery croissants and delectable raspberry jammers, among many other mouthwatering creations.
Until recently, local pastry-hounds could only get their hands on these treats by visiting one of Grand Central Bakery's locations.
But with the launch of the new cookbook, "The Grand Central Bakery Baking Book: Breakfast Pastries, Cookies, Pies, and Satisfying Savories from the Pacific Northwest's Celebrated Bakery", you can now create your favorite recipes at home.
Piper Davis and Ellen Jackson, authors of the narrative cookbook, stopped by In the Kitchen with Tom and Thierry on Saturday to highlight some of the signature recipes served in the Pacific Northwest's famed bakery and lunch spot, Grand Central Bakery.
"The recipes in this book are just like Grand Central Bakery: brilliant but not flashy, tasty but not self-absorbed, and full of homey charm," Seattle Chef Tom Douglas says.
From all-butter flaky pie dough to whipped chocolate ganache, you'll find just about everything to make a splash at your next dinner party.
But the Grand Central Baking Book isn't limited to recipes. All information relating to purchasing the highest quality cookware, incorporating the freshest ingredients and maintaining a well-stocked larder are included in the artfully illustrated cookbook.
"The hallmark of Grand Central and of my baking is no extra steps unless you have to take them," Davis says. Davis adds the cookbook was designed for everyday cooks who want to recreate Grand Central Bakery's signature pastries, breads and dishes at home.
"We really try to achieve that balance of the highest quality without alienating anyone with our flavors or approach," Piper says.
Grand Central Bakery is a locally-owned artisan bakery with several locations in Seattle and Portland.
