UNIVERSAL HUNKS: A Book Launch for Seattle Author & Collector David L. Chapman Featuring a Choreographed Bodybuilding Presentation
Saturday, October 19, 2013
Prolific Seattle author David L. Chapman returns to the Elliott Bay Book Company for the launch of his third book on bodybuilding and the muscular human form. Universal Hunks: A Pictorial History
of Muscular Men around the World, 1895-1975 is a lively, sexy, and intelligent pictorial history of muscular men from around the world. For over one hundred years, the image of the muscular man
has known no global boundaries; it has been the object of envy, admiration, and desire, and used to convey optimal health and fitness, product appeal, political power, sexual virility, and military might.
A captivating global tour, Universal Hunks includes photographs, posters, advertisements, magazine and comic book covers, product packaging, and more.
At his launch, writer and collector David L. Chapman will share examples of his visual ephemera, and discuss the eroticized, politicized, and commercialized male image through history, exploring its fascinating cultural context by country and continent.
Special guests to include three of Washington’s very own hunkiest hunks, professional bodybuilders Benny Mobley and Michael Landon, and amateur Peter Cheah, who will give a choreographed posing demonstration.
