Bumbershoot: Under the Umbrella

Words and Ideas 2013: SAL Presents Compounded: Writers in the Schools

Originally aired: Thursday, November 14, 2013

Ever wonder what's behind a compound word? A word like Bumbershoot, say? Some compound words are straightforward in meaning-schoolhouse, aiport, crosswalk-while others take on meanings different from each original word: headline, championship, clockwise. Writers in the Schools K-12 students and teaching artists tackle the problem of compound words in original poems and stories, read in tandem from the stage. Featuring Daemond Arrindell, Emily Bedard, Aaron Counts, Corinne Manning, Sierra Nelson, Katie Ogle, Ann Teplick and their students, plus a musical interlude by The Drop Shadows.
