County Council Chairman Dow Constantine has defeated former TV news anchor Susan Hutchison in the race for King County Executive.

The first round of ballots counted by King County showed Dow Constantine with a 14-percent lead over opponent Susan Hutchison.

In a post on Twitter Constantine wrote "Thank you! We won," before going on to give a victory speech thanking his supporters.

"Well that was over quick wasn't it. Just nine months of working everyday, then 15 minutes of waiting for those results," Constantine said to the crowd.

"We are looking forward to the rest of the vote as it comes in," said Hutchison in a speech to supporters that stopped short of a concession.

With 39 percent of the expected vote counted in Tuesday's election, Constantine led Hutchison with roughly 57 percent to her 43 percent - a gap of more than 34,000 votes. More than 244,000 votes have been tallied by county election workers.

Although voters in the largely Democratic county made the position nonpartisan last year, Constantine is a veteran Democratic politician, while Hutchison has strong ties to Republican politicians and some conservative causes.

Hutchison said she thinks "attack ads" made the difference, in the final days of the campaign.

"They were false, they were misleading. They were misrepresentations of me and that's what changed the momentum," said Hutchison.

Hutchison stayed at her party late into the evening thanking volunteers and chatting with supporters.

Constantine said he encourages Hutchison supporters to keep a close eye on him and hold him to his campaign promises. "We begin by appointing the best people to help as part of our team; Republicans, Democrats, Independents, people from across the county."

Constantine takes over in two weeks to fill the remainder of Ron Sims' term.

    That was uncalled for.
Apparently Dow Constentine is claiming victory. Poll results appear to clearly support this claim. Just moments ago I watched him come to the podium and speak. The very first thing he said after a bunch of thank you was... "well that did'nt take long did it". Obviously a big dig on how it was sooo easy to defeat Republican Susan Hutchinson. I feel that with that comment / statment we can easily predict how the next 4 years of King county are going to go. Yeah, I voted for Susan Hutchinson. Yeah, I'm dissapointed she lost. But a couple of weeks ago I predicted that she would probably loose by 10 points so this is not un-expected. But there was no reason for Dow to make such a snide and disrespectful remark right off the bat. For me the fear of KC Gov.continues but congratulations to Dow Constentine on his victory.

Glad I live in Snohomish County
The peoples republic of King County doesn't want change. They want more of the same. Tax us, threaten us, tax us, abuse use, tax us, take care of us. Lets make King County thier own state so the rest of Washington doesn't get dragged down.

    All hope is lost!
When we finally got rid of Ron Sims I had hoped for a reprieve from wacko liberal politics as usual in King County. Constantine will only be Sims with more hubris. King County voters are leftist sheep. Good bye..you all deserve him.

    susan brought this on herself
susan could of been king county exec,if only she had come clean.there is an old saying"don`t pee down my back and tell me it`s raining".she is a conservative republican(not thats there's anything wrong with that)who tried to bull-s everyone by claiming to be a "moderate". everyone knew she was lying. given a choice between a flawed incumbent and a liar, most people will choose the flawed incumbent every time.

Susan never said she was a moderate and she is not a liar. I think you are being a bit disingenuous when you say that it doesn't matter that Susan is a conservative Republican particularly when you are talking about King County. It is quite obvious that it matters to you. It's not over yet - Go Susan!

You can build your own bridges and tunnel have fun with it. I live in pierce county and we might not be the best in the country but we got our light rail already done, our bridge is built and on the way to be payed for. (we don't ask for the rest of the state to pay for it) and our taxes are lower. Dig in you morons up north keep it up it is fun for us to watch.

    What morons.
We are so sick of things the way they are. Thats is why we choose to replace Ron gone to Washington Sims with a twin. Try not to cry too much when Dow makes Ron's worst mistakes seem benign.
