McGinn widens lead in Seattle's mayoral race

Environmentalist Mike McGinn has widened his lead over cell phone executive Joe Mallahan to 2,384 votes in the race for Seattle mayor.

King County released a new batch of ballots Friday night that nearly doubled the 1,209-vote lead McGinn held on Friday afternoon. Thousands of votes remain to be counted next week.

State law requires a recount if the margin is fewer than 2,000 votes and less than one-half of 1 percent of the total vote.

Even after early results came out in McGinn's favor, he remained cautious, preparing for a long week of waiting for county workers to count the mailed-in ballots.

"Elections in Washington state can take a long time to be decided," McGinn said. "We'll have to watch it everyday."

McGinn credited his early lead to his opposition to the tunnel replacement project, even though he was criticized for softening his position in the final weeks of his campaign.

"I think the voters appreciated that an elected official just spoke honestly and straightly with them," said McGinn.

After the initial results Mallahan said he was stunned and blamed McGinn's negative messages and scare tactics about the tunnel.

"I don't want to sound like a victim, but Mike was very effective at telling people that I was a bad guy. I thought that would turn against him, but apparently some people listened," said Mallahan.

In an election night speech, Mallahan said, "This thing is far from over." He joked, "I want a whole lot of you in a plane down to Miami tomorrow to do the recount."

Mallahan and McGinn are two political newcomers. Both outpolled Mayor Greg Nickels in the August primary and advanced to Tuesday's election. Nickels had been dogged by criticism of his handling of a snow storm last year.

    Dollars?
If McGinn wins I wonder how much money its going to cost the taxpayer to start over on the viaduct debate?

In Seattle - but I cannot help but wonder how many 'votes' they are finding behind a 'door' to keep this lead ...? Ya I'm serious .... you look at his credentials and you go What-T-H?

Oh Boy, Thankfully, this is the guy that is NOT for that stupid tunnel and will actually Save our Viaduct. I love the viaduct which offers the best view available for those of us that cannot afford waterfront.....Please let it stay, just for me.......Stay firm McGinn and don't wimp out and change your tune. It would break my heart.......

    What?
ravenlover: Are you kidding? It's one thing to be against the tunnel, but to actaully like the old viaduct? That thing is an ugly, dangerous, noisy eyesore. I'd rather just go with the surface street option, than to keep that piece of junk. If it's a view you want just go down to the waterfront, or Alki, or the sculpture park, or the space needle or the.....you get the idea. The viaduct needs to go, and is certainly not worth saving just for the view. I still like the tunnel option; opening up the waterfront to the city would change the face of Seattle, and besides, tunnels are one of the coolest things ever. From their deep bore constriction, to the awesome boring machines, to the unequaled engineering and most importantly, tunnels hide the cars and the noise. The extra billion in construction cost is a lot, but it is not going to make or break the city of Seattle, we might as well go with the best option. In the long run it will be well worth it.

    Get rid of the Viaduct
The Viaduct MUST GO! First of all for safety reasons. Second of all to make Seattle a world class city. Open up the waterfront to ALL! Too many homeless and drug users are using the Viaduct for their hang outs. Open up the beautiful sky line we have and get rid of the ugliest eye soar in the Pacific Northwest!!!!

Apparently you are not a lover of the Seattle waterfront. You never visit the aquarium, Ye 'ol Curiosity Shop or any other waterfront attractions. My kids have enjoyed the waterfront since they were very young as I have. (I miss the waterfront street car). As you are too busy trying to drive the "rattle-trap-a-duct" watching the view instead of the road, you wouldn’t notice how impossible it is to have a conversation on the waterfront due to the traffic noise or notice the condoms and discarded needles that litter the ground under the viaduct. I grew up on QA & W Seattle and appreciated the viaduct for decades for what it is worth. Now I see the transformation of our very unique waterfront into a much better place to enjoy vistas rather than 3 minutes driving a dilapidated two lane death trap.

    Who cares?!
Either way you're getting an anti-capitalist extremist who will worsen the business climate in the city. Seattle just keeps getting burned by the same-old, same-old. This guy is just Greg Nickels recycled.
