The Seattle lawmaker who spearheaded Washington state's "everything but marriage" law for same-sex couples has declared victory in the campaign to uphold the law.

Sen. Ed Murray issued a statement Wednesday night saying that it was a "great day of celebration for the tens of thousands of gay and lesbian families in Washington, and for anyone who supports equality in our state and around the country."

With about 56 percent of the expected vote counted Wednesday night, Referendum 71 was leading 51 percent to 49 percent.

The measure asked voters to approve or reject the final expansion to the state's domestic partnership law, which grants registered domestic partners additional state-granted rights currently given only to married couples.

    Hoping For Passage!
This will send out a great message to the country that Washington State does not discriminate. Most of us want to respect the basic rights of others. We don't fall for the goofy ideas of the right that this will lead to adults marrying children. It's not happening in our current heterosexual marriage laws. We also seem to understand that there is a seperation of church and state and don't judge others(a verse from The Bible).

    Better read up
Too bad they don't understand what the Constitution really says about separation of church and state. Ever read it?

Please tell me why you are talking about separation of church and state. Did you actually read R-71? Did you know that an elderly person who is collecting social security from a spouse who has died will now be able to have a domestic partnership with a new boyfriend/girlfriend whatever and get benefits from that and still continue to get the social security from their dead spouse? How is that legit? This Ref is going to continue to erode away the definition of what a marriage is. Its supported by people who have no concept of what marriage is and have no belief in commitment, only a belief in what is best for themselves.

It depends on where the votes are still left to count
My guess is that the majority left to count are in King County, where moral standards are (for most of the people) severely lacking compared to the rest of the state.

You stated, "Its supported by people who have no concept of what marriage is and have no belief in commitment". So you're telling me I have no concept of what marriage is?? I've been married to a wonderful man for over 21 years, and have two children from this marriage that I'm very proud of. I also supported this referendum. Becareful of what you say. You will offend many married couples who very much know the concept of marriage and a STRONG belief in commitment.

    Just get over it already!
Whine, whine, whine, no one will ever be happy, and it's not right for us to hold benefits that people should be able to have! Many people think marriage is a joke anyways, it's already been ruined by the left and the right because they can't keep their things in their PANTS! The woman can't keep their legs closed PERIOD! That's what ruins marriage not this!

    Unfortunately
I'm not going to celebrate until the win is a foregone conclusion. Unfortunately the close results are just going to encourage the bible-thumpers to pump more money into 'The Cause' and try again next election cycle. I also expect we'll hear a lot more from them about anti-abortion, prayer in schools and other nonsense. The fight isn't over yet folks.
