Fake-diploma troopers should have been fired

I'm as ardent a supporter of law enforcement as you will find in the media. But good cops know every day that they must earn our trust. And that is why I'm so outraged by the punishment reversal of some bad cops by the Washington State Patrol.

Troopers can earn up to a four-percent pay hike if they have four-year college degrees. These troopers used fake diplomas and a bogus degree to collect that extra pay.

The State Patrol conducted an internal investigation in August - the recommendation at the time was that all eight should be fired. But now, in an amazing turnaround, the troopers will instead be suspended for 3-10 days each and allowed to keep their jobs.

Since they have been on paid administrative leave, they have essentially gotten a very long paid vacation for their scam.

I talked today with State Patrol Captain Jeff Devere who told me the eight troopers were not guilty of intent to defraud the taxpayers - just of poor judgement.

The phony degrees required no coursework. Of course these troopers knew that they did not deserve the extra pay that comes with a college degree. They have slapped in the face their colleagues who actually attended a four year university to merit the bonus pay.

I also think these troopers put the state in a horrible situation. If they are ever on a witness stand, what defense attorney wouldn't salivate at the opportunity to question the credibility and honor of any of these troopers?

One listener asked if any citizen can put phony license tabs on his car to defraud the state - and, if caught, just get a slap on the wrist? How would that be any different from what these troopers did?

And I will tell you, I heard from several WSP Troopers who are outraged that their colleagues weren't fired:

Dori,

If you read this please do it from "anonymous"!! I can honestly say that there are a majority of us Troops who completely disagree with the agency's decision not to terminate their employment. There is no way we buy that these fake diplomas were not obtained without intent....absolutely BS! Trust me when I say that many of us feel betrayed that these idiots get to go back and wear the same uniform. They do not represent the rest of us that follow the law, the regulations as well as continue to earn the trust of the citizens.

I apologize to the citizens of Washington on their behalf...they will never say they're sorry.

Mr. Monson,

I would love to call into your show, but fear retaliation from the Troopers Association. I can tell you that the rank and file are furious with our chief. This is an association flexing its political muscle. How can the Chief look at the facts, make a decision, then change his mind? Chief Sandberg, and Chiefs before her would have fired these troopers. When Chief Sandberg was put into a position where she had to fire a long time friend, I remember her saying, "its the right thing to do". Our Association has turned into what we have always fought against. I am still proud of our organization, its the fools who have taken our department over are what I am embarrassed about. Thank you for all your support. You are doing the right by all of us.
=====================================
I will always defend good cops from senseless media attacks. But I will just as zealously go after bad cops. I think the Washington State Patrol has stained its entire organization by keeping these troopers on the payroll.

    Anywhere else...
Anywhere else we would be terminated for falsification of training, certifications, or outright lying about job experience. People have lost jobs for claiming to have college degrees which they did not have. The WSP should be ashamed for not responding to this with the same high level of standards that the department is or was known for. Sounds like the Chief needs to be let go.

On the whole I feel that the WSP is a most proffesional police force we have in this state. Too bad they have a few bad apples! What I would like to know (I missed the show today) was this action a result of their union, politics, or some other agency? On the surface it sounds like a union deal...

    Give me a break...
They knew exactly what they were doing so fire them. The agency should have known also but since they did not shows there is a problem with this whole program. That does not excuse this; they are liars and cheats period.

    Say WA????
These individuals cheated, and we're actually rewarded with a year's paid vacation!!! Whoever is incharge of WSP needs to be terminated - not only for this poor desicion, but also for taking a year to do so! And for making the anouncement on a Friday afternoon... this just pixxes me off. I'm writing to my representative - but what can we really do to get responsible leadership and justice? I suppose the WSP will just increase their ticket quota (going after the taxpayers) to pay for this garbage

...that counts as lying on your resume which is gounds for IMMEDIATE termination where I work. This is a travesty at a time when respect for law enforcement needs to be enhanced. This does none of that.

do they think we, the public, are flippin' idiots? Of course, they knew what they were doing and it wasn't honest and above board. We tend to hold those in this office to a higher standard and I think the State Patrol officers who DO hold to that higher standard have every right to be upset ... what a stain on the group as a whole. Bad, bad judgment on reinstating the offending officers - where is there any accountability - they thought they could get away with it, and apparently they were right.

    Not really impressed
by the troopers who call in or write in anonymously to say that they disagree with the decision. These kinds of cases have been happening for several years now. Remember Michael Idland, the trooper who was molesting female motorists when he pulled them over? He was put on paid leave for 17 months, & even paid for a short time after his conviction. If rank & file troopers really wanted to put a stop to this they would go to their union officials and demand changes. They have not done the latter, so they must not want the former.

    Not sure of intent
I have to say if the officers knew they were obtaiing "fake" degrees from an uncredited school then there should be consequences. However, from a personal note I know that it can be very difficult to research the legitimacy of an online college. I researched almost a year before I chose my MBA program and ensured that the school was legitimate and had a brick and mortar (campus school) to go with it. Reputation of your degree is everything and integrity in your job is crucial.

One year paid vacation (adminstrative leave)...nice!
One full year of paid administrative leave these Troopers have enjoyed...to suffer a 10 day max suspension as a consequence. Not too shabby for them...a full YEAR of paid sabbatical...sounds like that cost the taxpayers much more than the 4% increase in pay they enjoyed. It'd take them 25 years of work at 4% to equal that free year of paid vacation. How much OT did the taxpayers of WA state have to shell out to the other Troopers who had to cover these guys shifts???? I'm stunned...

    to answer AmberWay's post...
this was not a case of troopers toiling away at course work for an unacredited college. This was a sham degree that (from the details we have heard) is simply sent to the applicant after you fill out some one-time compulsory paperwork that notes the "life experience" that qualifies you for a degree. I'm certain that if you sold nightcrawlers at the bait shop you could craft a paragraph or two outlining your meaningful life experience and receive the very same diploma (provided, of course, that your check clears).
