Fake-diploma troopers should have been fired

I'm as ardent a supporter of law enforcement as you will find in the media. But good cops know every day that they must earn our trust. And that is why I'm so outraged by the punishment reversal of some bad cops by the Washington State Patrol.

Troopers can earn up to a four-percent pay hike if they have four-year college degrees. These troopers used fake diplomas and a bogus degree to collect that extra pay.

The State Patrol conducted an internal investigation in August - the recommendation at the time was that all eight should be fired. But now, in an amazing turnaround, the troopers will instead be suspended for 3-10 days each and allowed to keep their jobs.

Since they have been on paid administrative leave, they have essentially gotten a very long paid vacation for their scam.

I talked today with State Patrol Captain Jeff Devere who told me the eight troopers were not guilty of intent to defraud the taxpayers - just of poor judgement.

The phony degrees required no coursework. Of course these troopers knew that they did not deserve the extra pay that comes with a college degree. They have slapped in the face their colleagues who actually attended a four year university to merit the bonus pay.

I also think these troopers put the state in a horrible situation. If they are ever on a witness stand, what defense attorney wouldn't salivate at the opportunity to question the credibility and honor of any of these troopers?

One listener asked if any citizen can put phony license tabs on his car to defraud the state - and, if caught, just get a slap on the wrist? How would that be any different from what these troopers did?

And I will tell you, I heard from several WSP Troopers who are outraged that their colleagues weren't fired:

Dori,

If you read this please do it from "anonymous"!! I can honestly say that there are a majority of us Troops who completely disagree with the agency's decision not to terminate their employment. There is no way we buy that these fake diplomas were not obtained without intent....absolutely BS! Trust me when I say that many of us feel betrayed that these idiots get to go back and wear the same uniform. They do not represent the rest of us that follow the law, the regulations as well as continue to earn the trust of the citizens.

I apologize to the citizens of Washington on their behalf...they will never say they're sorry.

Mr. Monson,

I would love to call into your show, but fear retaliation from the Troopers Association. I can tell you that the rank and file are furious with our chief. This is an association flexing its political muscle. How can the Chief look at the facts, make a decision, then change his mind? Chief Sandberg, and Chiefs before her would have fired these troopers. When Chief Sandberg was put into a position where she had to fire a long time friend, I remember her saying, "its the right thing to do". Our Association has turned into what we have always fought against. I am still proud of our organization, its the fools who have taken our department over are what I am embarrassed about. Thank you for all your support. You are doing the right by all of us.
=====================================
I will always defend good cops from senseless media attacks. But I will just as zealously go after bad cops. I think the Washington State Patrol has stained its entire organization by keeping these troopers on the payroll.

When I was in Army Intelligence, I was taught that, above all else, those who uphold the law should never ever put themselves above it. These troopers did. Is there an elected official who oversees the action of the WSP? That official needs to know that we Washingtonians find the decision to reinstate these troopers a travesty.

    Master Sgt an Idiot!
You must have tried the same stunt during your career. It is obvious you are a complete idiot! Otherwise, why would you try to link these guys to politics or a union "deal." No other reason, other than you are an idiot and a pri*k!

How is Master Sgt. and idiot?
The troopers who have kept their jobs and have received pay for the past year WITHOUT WORKING are members of the Washington State Patrol Troopers Association, the bargaining body for state troopers in the State of Washington. Do you really suppose they had no hand in helping these troopers keep their jobs?

If so, I would say somebody else here is the idiot...

Don't know- but it's entirely possible that the standards were so lax that almost any degree from almost anywhere, earned under almost any circumstance could have been used to claim a raise.

If so, the troopers were "technically" in compliance, and grounds for their dismissal would be tenuous. Their actions were still somewhere between edgy and flat out dishonest; but I wouldn't be surprised if legal ramifications didn't have as much to do with the eventual unsatisfactory resolution as did union pressure tactics.

    It's this kind of crap
that lead to the officer shooting a few days ago. You have peoplepeople burning police cars and shooting cops because the departments have left their officers vulnerable. The department refuses to root out corruption and rewards bad cops, so what do they think is going to happen? Do they think that the citizens will shower the officers with confetti? Uh no, people will get angry and a few crazies will decide to start picking off cops.

we need to know who are these officers, their names and what location in the state do they work, or ore they gonna keep their names secret? how can we know all this info?

    I Agree Completely
As someone who worked hard, over many years, for my undergraduate and graduate degrees, I resent the fact that these troopers got by with just a slap on the wrist. The firings should have been upheld. Just another example of those in government positions looking out for one another.

    They should be fired.
And it should not have taken an entire year for this to be determined and carried out.

I wonder if they did anything productive during their year of paid administrative leave, like work toward earning a real degree? Or did they just pick up some moonlight security job to add to the income we taxpayers paid them, which they failed to earn?

Spirit -v- Letter of the Law
I remember when this story first broke earlier. They knew quite well what they were doing. Even a High School Drop out would figure this "mill" out. These are suppose to be TRAINED INVESTIGATORS! Give me a fracking break. Spirit -vs- Letter ... if they even stooped to play that game - they have shown their true colors and it's not the PRIDE of the Colors of the WSP. No they should be fired - pure and simple. They have zero credibility now and anything they write, ticket wise or worse - they will be challenged if the spirit or letter of the law... they fracked up and gave the WSP a FRACKING BAD NAME!
