Fake-diploma troopers should have been fired

I'm as ardent a supporter of law enforcement as you will find in the media. But good cops know every day that they must earn our trust. And that is why I'm so outraged by the punishment reversal of some bad cops by the Washington State Patrol.

Troopers can earn up to a four-percent pay hike if they have four-year college degrees. These troopers used fake diplomas and a bogus degree to collect that extra pay.

The State Patrol conducted an internal investigation in August - the recommendation at the time was that all eight should be fired. But now, in an amazing turnaround, the troopers will instead be suspended for 3-10 days each and allowed to keep their jobs.

Since they have been on paid administrative leave, they have essentially gotten a very long paid vacation for their scam.

I talked today with State Patrol Captain Jeff Devere who told me the eight troopers were not guilty of intent to defraud the taxpayers - just of poor judgement.

The phony degrees required no coursework. Of course these troopers knew that they did not deserve the extra pay that comes with a college degree. They have slapped in the face their colleagues who actually attended a four year university to merit the bonus pay.

I also think these troopers put the state in a horrible situation. If they are ever on a witness stand, what defense attorney wouldn't salivate at the opportunity to question the credibility and honor of any of these troopers?

One listener asked if any citizen can put phony license tabs on his car to defraud the state - and, if caught, just get a slap on the wrist? How would that be any different from what these troopers did?

And I will tell you, I heard from several WSP Troopers who are outraged that their colleagues weren't fired:

Dori,

If you read this please do it from "anonymous"!! I can honestly say that there are a majority of us Troops who completely disagree with the agency's decision not to terminate their employment. There is no way we buy that these fake diplomas were not obtained without intent....absolutely BS! Trust me when I say that many of us feel betrayed that these idiots get to go back and wear the same uniform. They do not represent the rest of us that follow the law, the regulations as well as continue to earn the trust of the citizens.

I apologize to the citizens of Washington on their behalf...they will never say they're sorry.

Mr. Monson,

I would love to call into your show, but fear retaliation from the Troopers Association. I can tell you that the rank and file are furious with our chief. This is an association flexing its political muscle. How can the Chief look at the facts, make a decision, then change his mind? Chief Sandberg, and Chiefs before her would have fired these troopers. When Chief Sandberg was put into a position where she had to fire a long time friend, I remember her saying, "its the right thing to do". Our Association has turned into what we have always fought against. I am still proud of our organization, its the fools who have taken our department over are what I am embarrassed about. Thank you for all your support. You are doing the right by all of us.
=====================================
I will always defend good cops from senseless media attacks. But I will just as zealously go after bad cops. I think the Washington State Patrol has stained its entire organization by keeping these troopers on the payroll.

    Spirit vs letter......
Anybody who ever mailed off their IRS tax return with a wink, a nod, and a hope that thay won't get scrutinized too severely fully understands what it is to comply with the letter but disregard the spirit of the law. The law says we should pay the taxes we owe, but that doesn't stop many people from searching for "loopholes" or "defensible interpretations" to pay ridiculously low rates or avoid taxation all together.

Prime specific example: The 7 and 8-figure corporate CEO's who restructure their compensation from "salary" to "corporate dividends" in order to fall into a 15% tax bracket.

when we find them, they either a) go to jail for tax evasion or b) make them work for the Obama administration.

Hey, I found an online diploma mill...
Won't say where, but I'm looking at a website right now where I can buy an Associate's Degree for $120, a Bachelor's Degree for $130 (what's $10 for two years?), and all the way up to a Professorship for $197. You can get transcripts for another $125, too. And none of that pesky coursework...that's for schmucks who want to EARN a degree when they could simply pay for one. Besides, have you seen the price of tuition and books lately? If I buy a Professorship, can I have John Batiste's job? I doubt if HE's a Professor! I promise I'll drive 55 on I-5.

who ever cheated on their income tax, the recession would be over. The new source of a booming economy would be building all the jails needed to house a walloping majority of the population.

    Not necessarily Chuck...
Most people who cheat on their taxes don't get caught. If you make an error, the IRS starts auditing every year they can. I know, my Mom-in-law is a revenue agent for the IRS. Once they have a history of lying, you are fairly branded as such. Now that the settlement has been reached without a true punishment (I'm sorry; 3-10 days on the beach does not a punishment make), their credibility is destroyed.

    Fake Diplomas
Dori, I am an aircraft mechanic with over 20 years of experience and an FAA license. I can apply my licence and experience to a degree program. But there is no way they would give enough credit to get a degree of any kind with out doing some course work along the way. These guys are no better than the thugs on the street that steal money from the citizens of this state. They should be 'Fired' and we should get our money back. Thanks

Spirit vs Letter, Part II..So how does this compare
...to situations where a guy living (for example) on the Olympic Peninsula rents a private mailbox in (say) Wisconsin to establish an "address" in that state. Once the address is established, the guy living (for example) on the Olympic Peninsula uses that address to obtain (hypothetically) a Wisconsin driver's license. While continuing to live in Washington State, this party purchases motor vehicles and produces his Wisconsin driver's license as "proof" that he is exempt from the same sales tax that everybody else pays. (How very special). He also pays substantially less in vehicle license fees by buying Wisconsin plates rather than Washington.

And then, in 2008, when this party discloses his activities on the Dori Monson show blog he is *applauded* by many of the same people now castigating these troopers for using phony representations for personal gain. In fact, some of the same people were quick to report a variety of schemes by which they have evaded various Washington state taxes.

I don't support what the troopers did- but the moral difference between presenting a diploma (that you know you did not earn) in pursuit of a financial advantage and presenting a driver's license with an out of state address (where you obviously know you do not live) in pursuit of financial advantage is what, exactly?

    Diplomagate
Like the first WSP personnel that posted a comment, I am saddened by the judgment these troopers showed. These troopers have demonstrated a lack of commitment to the citizen's of Washington and support of the oath they took when the Governor swore them in. This has tarnished the agency and the credibility we have established over the years. Since they will not apologize for their actions or take responsibility for their lack of judgment, I want to apologize to the citizen's of Washington for this agregious behavior. Please post anonymous

    fake diploma
Dori I too am outraged. To say the troopers didn't mean to defraud taxpayers is a line of crap. So the diplomas fell into their laps and they thought they were real? NO! They sought them out knoeing full well it is wrong. A friend of mine was denied a position with the force because he couldn't remember if he smoked a joint 25 years ago, so was considered untruthful. This was his only glitch, should he have lied? I'm thinking he could have baught a diploma. He would have never done such a thing. Sheila in Auburn
