Only in Seattle

A couple weeks ago, I talked with both the Freedom From Religion Foundation and with Metro Transit about FFRF's anti-religion bus campaign they're running this Christmas season.

As I said on the show, I don't blame FFRF for its campaign. they're athiests - doing what athiests do.

I do, however, blame Metro Transit for allowing this campaign. Now that the busboards have hit the streets, many of my Christian listeners have contacted me about how offensive this campaign is to them.

One listener sent me a photo of a busboard that I have seen all over the streets the last week or so.

I continue to believe that there is no way Metro would ever allow a campaign that is so offensive towards blacks... towards gays... towards hispanics, Asians, transsexuals, or hermaphrodites.

But our government-run transit agency has no problem with a campaign that targets people of faith. The last acceptable targets of government-endorsed bigotry.

Only in Seattle.

    Hmmmm
Proclaiming their beliefs and trying to convert others to their way of thinking.

What could be wrong with that?

I mean, it's not as if they're cramming their beliefs down anyone else's throat, is it?

Besides, they're running these in Seattle. Who are they actually targeting? Are there that many people of faith actually left in Seattle that they would warrant this ad campaign?

    They should not allow
Any political, social, or religious advertising on government property, period. No ads for or against any person running for office or issue up for vote, no advertising by a church or any religious group, for or against, and no pro or anti social issue advertising. It's not often I agree with Dori, but in this case I do. There would be lawsuits up the Wazzoo if a Metro bus had a advertisement saying "Yes Virginia... Santa is heterosexual".

I would like to see someone contact you with a similar message. A picture of a crescent moon and "Thats right Ahkmed, there is no Allah." Or is it only PC to attack Christians. Wait, I already know the answer to that.

    Oh c'mon, atheists!
Not only is your message offensive, hypocritical, ignorant and a double-standard, it's just plain stupid and devoid of any true cleverness. You claim you're the most intelligent people on the planet...THIS is the best you can do? And I repeat my previous post: if a universal negative is the hardest thing to prove, thereby requiring the most faith to believe in, then atheists--by believing there is no God--exercise greater faith than do those who believe in God.

Liberal progressive, Christian hating bigots are cowards.

Although they like to equate Muslim terrorists with "those whacky Christian groups", they know they will not get blown up by attacking Christians.

They don't have the guts to put up an ad mocking Islam.

Dori wrong on this, several different ways
As a Christian, I do not feel "attacked" by the bus ad. It isn't as though the ad says "This particular individual is a fool for believing in God", it expresses a belief by the group in question that God does not exist. The ad doesn't use some image like Christ on the cross obliterated by a big red X, but rather an entirely secular and non-religious image of a magic elf who rides his flying sled straight into the middle of the Christian solstice celebration -honoring the birth of Jesus- every December 24.

God is at work all around us. He's not hiding in a church somewhere or wedged between the pages of the Bible. His visage can be seen in the collective faces of his children, made in his spiritual image. The universe, created by divine will and holy thought ("let there be...and there was"), expresses the characteristics of the Creator in the same way tht a DaVinci painting gives us some clues to the nature of the artist. As a Christian I get to be amazed every day at the perpetual miracle in which we have the privilege to participate. I feel very sorry for those who believe that everything resolves to a chemical formula or a mathematical calculation; they almost certainly miss the glorious experiences of mystery, wonder, and faith. Everyone who believes in a divine being, beings, or even a divine force shares the gift of faith- Christian, Jewish, Muslim, Wiccan, Buddhist, Hindu, or tribal religions.

As a Christian, I believe that all of humanity are children of God, and that we are spiritually brothers and sisters. Some of my brothers and sisters will always disagree with the perspectives and beliefs of others. Jesus promised that following his teachings and philosophies would be difficult, and that followers would be subject to ridicule and scorn. He promised the reward would be worth the sacrifice; and so it is- every day. Christians should not expect to be revered or respected for their fatih, and should no be surprised when they are reviled.

From a secular perspective, we must allow freedom of speech in any public forum. Those who are offended by these signs are free to purchase signs promoting a counter message. In a society founded upon principles that include refraining from establishing a government sponsored or "official" religion, we cannot decide to allow certain messages addressing the nature or existence of God but disallow others. LIke Christianity, sometimes freedom is a heavy load to carry and it isn't going to be easy every day.

The difference between a sign that reads "There is no God" and a sign that reads "Blacks are the product of intercourse between men and animals" or "Jews are the result of sex between Eve and Satan" (both sentiments expressed by a small, radical group that claims to be Christian)is that one subscribes to faith as a matter of self declaration. It's a lot like belonging to a political party. Some people switch back and forth between Democrat and Republican during a lifetime, others will have periods of doubt, belief, and disbelief in a lifetime. You can accept or renounce religion- you cannot simply accept or renounce your race, ethnic heritage, or sexual orientation.

Christians "offended" by the presence of non-Christians among us or by such groups daring to express opinions that differ with our own spiritual awareness, gifts, and experience? I can't appreciate why non-Christian messages should be found "offensive", this is part of the world God created. An evangelical might say, "Wow! Look at the tremendous opportunity here to demonstrate the love of Jesus to this group!"

Man is a spiritual being. Spirit, like energy, is all pervasive and cannot be destroyed. The failure of the spiritually blind to appreciate this fundamental reality doesn't reduce my ability to live in the Kingdom. :-)

    No Offense Taken
Looking at the busboard, it is a simple declaration of non faith. I disagree with it, but I see nothing offensive in it. I find people who hide behind agnosticisim more offensive. I do think that if you are an agressive non believer, you should not celebrate Christmas at all. No presents, tree, parties, or any other goodies. If you hate the faith, you don't get any of the goodies.
