Mayor Nickels: Morally, intellectually and constitutionally flawed

Lame duck Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels is on his media farewell tour (he somehow has bypassed my show). In an interview with KING-5's Jean Enersen, Nickels was asked about his illegal, unconstitutional gun ban.

Nickels' answer revealed the bizarre thinking that contributed to his ouster as mayor:

The city passed a ban on guns on city-owned property where children are likely to be, but the constitutionality of the ban is in doubt and could turn into a court battle that could cost the city a lot of money.

"You know, if we can save one person, one life, then I think it is absolutely worth it. But we lost a police officer on Halloween night. He was shot with an assault weapon. Why do we have assault weapons? No hunter needs an assault weapon. There is no purpose to that except to take human life," said Nickels.

He was asked about his unconstitutional gun ban on city property and he had the audacity to bring up the murder of Officer Brenton. A bizarre and shameful non-sequitur.

But I'm most intrigued by his statement "if we can save...one life, then I think it is absolutely worth it." First of all, there is absolutely no way to ever prove that a gun ban has saved any lives.

Secondly, is that the new liberal standard for when it's acceptable to ignore the constitution? As one listener asked Tuesday, why doesn't the mayor ban all cars in the city? That would almost certainly save lives.

How about an unconstitutional ban on homosexuality? There have been many AIDS deaths in the city - now that Mayor Nickels has established the standard that you can ignore the constitution if you can save one life, where will he stop?

Will he authorize Seattle Police to start torturing suspects to get information? After all, that might save just one life.

Ah... how easy it is to break down the idiocy of the anti-gun left.

My political leanings are towards the left of middle. That said, you must remember Dori that I and many others voted this narcissist off the liberal island. The sooner his term comes to an end, the sooner the citizens can hit the reset button and get rid of some of these crazy policies he has put in place over the last 8 years. I only hope that we can afford the lawsuits spawned by hizzoner's "farewell tour". This town needs an enema!!!

I thought that the 'if it saves one life it's worth it' carnard had been so totally discredited that everyone had dropped it. What about obesity? What is it, 300,000 annual U.S. death related to overeating? How about mandatory 'obesity asylums' along the same lines as mental health facilities? If it saves 300,000 lives, for sure it would be worth it. Right?

If his goal is to save a life......
He should have banned driving cars in Seattle. He could have put up signs on the streets, "Cars Banned". That would save more lives.

Why does the Mayor, the Governor, Representative McDermott, or anyone else, "owe" Dori Monson any addittional opportunity for him to call them names, make fun of them, lie about them, and worse? Who is he, exaclty, that he has the right to demand their presence at his feet? I know:

Narcissistic personality disorder is a mental disorder in which people have an inflated sense of their own importance and a deep need for admiration. They believe that they're superior to others and have little regard for other people's feelings. But behind this mask of ultra-confidence lies a fragile self-esteem, vulnerable to the slightest criticism.

What does that have to do with the article? Nothing.

Maybe you have narcissistic personality disorder?

The gun enthusiasts are right, "packing" definitely has an effect on safety in an urban environment...
Nickels' reach exceeded his grasp in this case, but the ironic aspect of all the dust up is that his edict would have done more to improve the safety of folks who ordinarily carry guns than anybody else.

At least according to extensive research by a group of epidemiologists at the U of Penn. Even when factoring in the ocassional situation where an armed victim wins a shootout with an assailant, folks who produce a gun during an assault are 4.5 times *more* likely to get shot than are unarmed victims.

Makes sense, really. All that most crooks really want to do is relieve you of cash and credit cards, maybe an expensive watch, and make a clean getaway. There's no reason to injure or kill the victim, and doing so will make the sentence much harsher if caught for the crime. Lots of crooks are probably unlikely to actually pull the trigger unless they feel especially threatened.

Trying to "draw" when taken by surprise and a bad guy already has a gun pointed at you is probably a very bad idea.

It would be interesting to see some of these tough talking gun nuts from out in the toolie weeds actually come to Seattle, wave a gun around, and start demanding respect. It's pretty unlikely they would still have their gun after the first 10-15 minutes of such a stunt.

So the gun lovers all scream bloody murder about Nickels, when if they bothered to follow his executive order they would, at least statistically, be safer. Figures.

I promise to never crawl out from the toolie weeds to visit Seattle while armed - unless I'm also packing cash, cards and a watch.

one study does not a conculsion make.
I have read of DOJ studies that found the reverse--those who respond to criminal violence with armed resistance were the least likely to be injured. Anyway, I hope the authors of the PA study had the mental acuity to realize that a crime victim who draws a gun is at least 4.5 times more likely to be in a life threatening situation. Several times in my life I have been accosted by criminals while armed and not had to draw my gun. I resisted verbally, and the threat went away. But had the situation escalated, I was well-practiced and ready to draw. It appears the PA study would have drawn the conclusion that I avoided injury because I didn't draw, but in fact it was just the reverse; I didn't draw because I didn't believe life/limb was in danger.

She should have asked him "Then did the gun ban save officer's Brenton's life?" I wonder what position he will hold in Obama's administration because that's where he's heading.

Gun ban will save many lives
PS, the gun ban will save a lot of lives...... the lives of criminals who won't get shot back at because their victims will now have no guns.
