Episode #434, Open Thread: Time to eat some feces!
On today's show, the leaf fairy came to Luke's house! Are the Pixies
(the band) really so awesome awesome? And Luke makes the case for
laying off those burgers.
About 8 years ago, I stopped eating hamburgers since I wanted to lose weight. It was easier than I thought, until a year later when my boyfriend and I were on a trip and stopped by a place that "had the best tasting hamburgers"....so I had to try it. Sadly, having that first burger was my BIG (20 lbs later) mistake. I need to listen to Luke's speech today -- maybe that'll inspire me to stop! Oh! He's talking about it now!!
Very happy to hear the fecal clamp info again. More people need to think about where the food they eat comes from. I actually gave up meat in 1987 when I ACTUALLY EXAMINED up-close the "fresh, lean, high quality" hamburger meat I was about to fry up. There were so many mystery bits I couldn't believe it! Then after hooking up with a vegetarian girlfriend who made me watch slaughterhouse footage (yep, feces covered cattle - yum!)...there was no going back. I think I'd rather risk getting my ecoli from dead plants...My 90-year old Grandma keeps reminding me that farm workers poop in the fields so I can't avoid it.
Came home today and I also had been left a gift by the tbtl fairy. My Shirt had arrive in perfect condition. Looks great!!!!! Will enjoy wearing it to the Artic.
I also gave up beef and pork in 1987 and was kind of jazzed to realize that I HAVEN'T been eating it longer than I HAVE! On a side note, a new student of mine told me she got seriously ill last month from a Jack in the Box burger (marysville location) and found several of her friends also got it. Still haven't learned, have they?
Pixies: LOVED the first E.P. and Surfer Rosa ("Cactus" especially!) and was thrilled to finally get to see them. I saw them twice - once at the Moore and once at the Paramount...fell asleep BOTH times. Literally! They are the ONLY band I've ever fallen asleep to in a live setting. The monkey had apparently already gone to heaven as it was right before they broke up and they didn't seem too interested in being there either. Plus, the Moore was 1/2 empty! It was just an all-around depressing experience. Still love those first two records though.
I couldn't help but wonder as I listened to the podcast how grinding your own hamburger meat from steaks would fix the feces problem. It's not like they use a special process to skin animals destined to become delicious steaks. The hide comes off, smears feces over much of the meat, some of which is on the steak that you will later grind into your own fancy ground beef.
