We are pulling out of Palm Springs early Monday morning and I'm very sad to leave. The weather was perfect, the people were friendly and we had a great dining experience at John-Henry's thanks to a recommendation from Frank (a Palm Springs 10).
Next up is Tucson, AZ then Las Cruces, NM and then into Texas.
Here's a cute shot of Mr. Knightly this morning in Joshua Tree National Park:
Your trip has been a boon to TBTL. Not that we don't want you at the Burbank Studios(TM), but your journey adds longitudinal dimension, a plot, to TBTL. Please be safe and enjoy a few days/weeks of being very much by yourselves and nobody else for miles and miles while on the road between Palm Springs and TX. I've traveled that road many a times.
Reminds me of 1984-1988 when Joshua Tree Monument was literally my backyard. Drank a lot of beer and climbed a lot of rock formations there (yes, at the same time). I was just down the road when U2 was there shooting the cover for The Joshua Tree. Sweet memories indeed! Lastly, thanks for the road trip updates, and continued wishes to you for more happy trails!
Joshua Tree is such a beautiful place in its own way. Wondered if you stopped to see where the stolen corpse of Gram Parsons was cremated near Cap Rock? Enjoying your ongoing travelogue.
I really hope you get to drive at some point in northern Arizona, particularly on highway 89. Try to make it to Bitter Springs, a spectacular lookout maybe 45 minutes south of Page. It is probably the best bit of highway I have ever driven on, continuing south through the Painted Desert and north through Utah. I am thankful all of the time that I live relatively close to it.
@SarahR - Is Bitter Springs where you can look across to the Vermillion Cliffs? My parents live in Page but I don't know the area all that well. Lots of spectacular sights there.
Congress is great! Stay away from the U bars unless that's what you want. There's A LOT of great dive bars for people watching and plenty of bar games to be had. The Shelter was always a fav as was Cow Pony, Buffet, Home Den and now called the Meet Rack.
While in Tucson, gotta hit up the Bison Wicthes. Good good Margaritas. Interesting architecture in the Barrio District, Sam Hughes neighborhood, and Gates Pass area.
Jen - Your journey is making me reminiscence about one of my favorite audio books. I found an audio book in my library called "Tales from the End of the Road." Performed by Tom Bodett if you have not heard it, it is awesome. You are giving all of us a taste of what we miss the most America, it's cultures and the stories of others. I would encourage you to do audio recordings of your adventures and then have Luke play them as a feature on the show. Keep up the great work!
BTW have you and Luke figured out yet how we are going to keep you on the air come April - I am ready to pay my monthly fee!
