Approve Referendum 71 campaign maintains lead

The latest batch of results has the Approve Referendum 71 campaign in the lead with over 52 percent of the vote.

As of Thursday afternoon, voters are narrowly approving the state's new "everything but marriage" law that marks a significant expansion of rights for gay couples.

The measure asked voters to approve or reject the final expansion to the state's domestic partnership law, which grants registered domestic partners additional state- granted rights currently given only to married couples.

"This is a remarkable statement by the voters of Washington," said Anne Levinson, chairwoman of Washington Families Standing Together, the group fighting to keep the law on the books. "They have a history of being fair- minded and compassionate, and they've proven that once again."

Levinson said that if the vote trend continues, "we'll be making history in our state in moving forward toward full equality for gay and lesbian families in our state."

The expanded law would add benefits, such as the right to use sick leave to care for a domestic partner, and rights related to adoption, child custody and child support.

Opponents remained optimistic that they could close the gap, but warned that if the law was approved, gay marriage would be the next step in Washington state.

"I think it will be immediate," said Gary Randall of Protect Marriage Washington, which pushed to get the referendum on the ballot. "Now was the time to stand against it."

The law was supposed to take effect July 26, but now will go on the books only if approved by voters. If rejected, previously enacted legislation on domestic partnerships with fewer benefits to gay couples would remain in place.

The underlying domestic partnership law, which the Legislature passed in 2007, provided hospital visitation rights, the ability to authorize autopsies and organ donations, and inheritance rights when there is no will. Under state law, senior couples can register as domestic partnerships as well.

Last year, lawmakers expanded that law to give domestic partners standing under laws covering probate and trusts, community property and guardianship.

More than 12,000 people in Washington state are registered as domestic partners.

Washington state, along with several other states including California, Oregon and New Jersey, have laws that either recognize civil unions or domestic partnerships that afford same-sex couples similar rights to marriage.

that article yesterday sure got some responses
to keep it short: there are BIGOTS on both sides of this issue; homosexuality is also condemned in the New Testament; all major religions condemn homosexuality; religious nuts played a major role in the abolition of slavery in western nations

Gospelance please site book and verse so I may read
Where Jesus condemned homosexuality in the New Testament. I have read the New Testament and I must have missed it, can you help?

    Well then
Its a good thing our laws are based on the Constitution and no some 2000 year old tome.

    Romans, chapter one....
is where the Apostle Paul condemns homosexuality. If you consider the Bible to be the "word of God," then Jesus is the author of Paul's writings there. Jesus is the Jehovah of the Old Testament; therefore, Jesus is the one who destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah--and not for "bad manners" either. romans 1:26, 27 specifically address the issue. must be read in context. as for the Constitution comment, I'm not going to try to make the argument that many of our laws are based on the moral laws of the Bible. once again, my arguments were not specifically addressed: I just get the usual nonsense.

    Everyone must control their passions
This homosexuality thing is a dead end. It leads to nowhere except heartache and death. Before you cast me as a homophobe or bigot, understand I lost two brothers to HIV/AIDS. Very handsome, likable young men who, in the end, told all, including their gay friends, that the reason they got deep into the lifestyle was that they were unable to keep their own passions within the bounds the Lord has set. There are more promiscuous heterosexuals than homosexuals and those people also have a hard time controlling their passions. And yet society would not tolerate a movement to legalize fornication and adultery or promote the lifestyle in the community, in the schools or in the churches. Rational people realize such action would be detrimental to the very fabric of society. Sure, it happens, but it is still wrong. How many parades, how many referendums do you see in Olympia or anywhere else calling for open acceptance of heterosexual promiscuity? I'm very saddened to see this incremental step toward the demeaning of the covenant of marriage.

    Everyone must control their passions...
I agree with this. To have a respectable society everyone must exercise self control and personal responsibiliy. Like it or not, it is natural for folks to hate boundaries and rules and seek a life of self satisfaction and over indulgence. Choosing a lifestyle that has no boundaries will have its undeniable consequences - in all facets of life. This is probably why the gay community has such a rub with the "Bible Thumpers" since Bible Thumpers have a belief system that typically rules out the gay lifestyle. When a society doesn't live in a responsible way, then the government must make rules to force responsibiliy - alchohol limits, gambling laws, sex related laws etc. In the end though, the natural course of irresponsible living usually works out is own punishment with things like obesity, STD's, addictions, scarred emotions, and even death. Lets all take a lesson from it.

    Wow, such hate and ignorance
I wonder if any of these people can tell us when they chose to be heterosexual?
